Nigerian Bishops Berate Minister Over Plan To Legalize Abortion

It has never been like this before! What is happening? In Nigeria? Ah!

Nigerian Catholic Bishops have deplored an alleged move by the Minister of Health, in collaboration with foreign organizations to encourage abortion among women in Nigeria.

In a communiqué issued at the end of a 3-day second plenary meeting, the Bishops kicked against the alleged move by the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, in collaboration with foreign organizations, to encourage abortion by increasing the culture of contraception among Nigerian women.

The clerics described the move by the federal government as an ‘anti-life policy’ after the plenary meeting held in Akure, Ondo State capital on Wednesday.

The communiqué signed by its President and Archbishop of Ibadan, Gabriel Abegunrin and Secretary, Bishop Felix Ajakaye noted that

“the policy is being done all in the name of providing better maternal health and empowering our people.”
The communiqué reads: “We see such moves as deceptive to our people and harmful to moral values and we ask Nigerians to reject them
on Wednesday condemned the recent move by the Minister of Health, Prof Adewole in collaboration with the foreign agencies to commit the federal government to increasing the culture of contraception and subsequently, abortion among our people” , Vanguard reports.

APC does want any virile opposition against it - Gov Fayose

APC does want any virile opposition against it - Gov Fayose

Audacious Ekiti Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC wants the‎ Peoples Democratic Party, PDP dead as its a virile opposition to its obnoxious policies. The Governor said such a development would not, however, be in the interest of the country and Nigerians at large.

In a statement by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, the governor was quoted as saying that a virile opposition was a vital ingredient for democracy and necessary to make democracy thrive.

Fayose, who could not attend the convention owing to the blockade of the road leading to the Old Presidential Lodge of the Rivers State government house where he was accommodated, said the condoning off of the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt by the police on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, had the input of the APC-led Federal Government, saying the police only acted the script written by the APC-led government.
"I witnessed what the police did early today in Port Harcourt, it is most unfortunate. It has shown that we are indeed in a perilous time in the country. The APC is desperate to kill opposition and silence others‎ because they are afraid that their inability to properly govern the country and tackle the challenges facing us as a nation would be exposed by a virile PDP.
"The Buhari government is dictatorial. There is tension everywhere.‎ All sectors are down and they are focusing on killing the opposition.‎ xxxWhat business has APC with PDP internal matters?
"If they said they wanted to act on court orders, why didn't they act on more than four orders that were in favour of the Markafi group?‎ They don't have answers to the terrible situations in the country but they know that an organised PDP will be embloden to challenge them," he said.
The governor wondered what would have happened if the PDP acted like the APC and refused to hand over to the APC last year. Fayose said it was unfortunate that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff had turned himself to an instrument in the hands of APC leaders to destablise the PDP.

* This kind of government is really unhealthy for the country's democracy *

Young Nigerian imprisoned for 10 years for raping a British teacher in Dubai

A young Nigerian salesman has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for raping a 32-year-old British teacher on New Year’s Eve. According to The Siasat Daily, the victim was returning home at 3am when she saw the man in the lift and mistook him for a resident.

"He asked me on which floor I was in, and as I reached my flat, I was surprised to see him following me. He said he wanted to make sure I was okay. I told him to stop and leave," the woman said. When the woman opened the door to her flat, he pushed her inside, stripped her, dragged her to a bed and raped her. She said.
"I resisted him hard but failed to stop him,” said the teacher, who ran to the toilet to hide. He and I were pulling the bathroom door but then he stopped and when I checked, I found that he was gone."
The woman dressed and went to a friend’s flat, where she called police. The police arrested the accused around 11am on the same day. The police officer said.
"He told us that he was visiting one of his friends in the same building but didn’t find him and that as he was leaving the building, he met the woman near the lift and she was drunk. He confessed to us that he had sex with her but said she asked him and she got undressed on her own."
Medical reports confirmed sexual activity but not the rape. Dubai Criminal Court convicted the defendant of charges including rape, physical assault and trespass and ordered his deportation after completion of his term.

President Buhari has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to commence the exploration of crude oil and other hydrocarbon exploratory activities in the Benue Trough.

According to a statement by the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikaniti Baru, disclosed this while receiving a delegation from the Benue State Government, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
This is coming few days after the same directive was given to the NNPC to intensify crude oil exploration in the Chad basin.

The Benue Trough is a major geological formation underlying a large part of Nigeria, extending about 1,000 kilometer north-east from the Bight of Benin to Lake Chad. It is part of the broader Central African Rift System.

The GMD stated that the directive to commence exploratory activities in the Benue Trough was part of efforts to guarantee energy security of the country.

In addition, the NNPC also stated that it has reinvigorated its collaboration with the Benue State Government on the Ethanol project which is geared towards production of biofuels for energy sufficiency.

Baru noted that ethanol when blended with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise known as petrol, ensures excellent performance of vehicles, stressing that energy sufficiency and proficiency were part of the cardinal objectives of the NNPC.

The NNPC added that it has initiated a renewable energy programme in August 2005 which is in conformity with the Kyoto Protocol agreement to which Nigeria is a signatory.

The primary aim of the programme, according to the NNPC, is to link the agricultural sector with the oil and gas industry, adding that it is also targeted at gradually reducing the nation’s dependence on imported gasoline, reducing environmental pollution as a result of consumption of wholesale fossil fuel as well as creating a commercially viable industry that can boast of sustainable domestic jobs.

“A similar programme in Brazil has a thriving biofuels industry providing quantum economic benefits including creation of hundreds of thousands of employment opportunities for nationals of that country,” the NNPC noted.

Also speaking, leader of the Benue State delegation, Mr. Terwase Orbunde, commended the NNPC for resolving the recent fuel supply challenges and pledged the readiness of the state government to support the quick take-off of the Ethanol project, adding that the project would generate jobs for Nigerians.
Orbunde assured the NNPC of full support and cooperation from the State Government and the host communities, stressing that the State Government fully identifies with the energy policy of the Federal Government.

The Benue trough, according to Wikipedia, has its southern limit at the northern boundary of the Niger Delta, where it dips down and is overlaid with Tertiary and more recent sediments. It extends in a northeasterly direction to the Chad Basin, and is about 150 kilometer wide.
The trough is arbitrarily divided into lower, middle and upper regions, and the upper region is further divided into the Gongola and Yola arms.

The Anambra Basin in the west of the lower region is more recent than the rest of the trough, being formed during a later period of compression, but is considered part of the formation.

Ex-FIFA president, Joao Havelange, died this morning in Brazil after overseeing the world's football governing body for two decades. He was aged 100 years.

He had been treated for pneumonia in Rio de Janeiro’s Samaritano hospital back in July.
The hospital said in a statement that Havelange died on Tuesday morning, but did not state cause of death.
“The institution supports the family and friends of the sports leader,” said the brief statement.

Born on May 8, 1916, Havelange turned 100 this year. He expanded the World Cup from 16 to 32 teams and made it one of sport’s most important events. He organised six World Cups as FIFA president from 1974 to 1998, when Sepp Blatter replaced him. He secured lucrative broadcast deals, brought nations into FIFA, and created the women’s World Cup.

With more cash for football also came widespread financial wrongdoing by its top officials, including Havelange.

In 2013, FIFA ethics court judge Joachim Eckert said Havelange’s conduct had been “morally and ethically reproachable.”

Havelange was never punished. He was allowed to resign his FIFA honorary presidency in 2013, a move that kept him out of reach of the federation’s ethics committee.
Havelange resigned from the International Olympic Committee in 2011, citing unspecified health problems. By stepping down he avoided a possible suspension for taking kickbacks from former FIFA marketing partner ISL.

The stadium used for track and field during these Olympics is officially named the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, although organising officials removed his name for the Games, simply calling it “Olympic Stadium.”

Havelange chaired his country’s football confederation from 1956 to 1974 and was first elected FIFA president 42 years ago after defeating incumbent president Stanley Rous of England. Havelange based his campaign on giving more prominence to voters outside Europe, adding new World Cup places and more funding.

He had been in and out of hospitals in recent years due to respiratory problems.
Havelange competed in two Olympics — as a swimmer in Berlin in 1936 and as a water polo player in 1952 in Helsink

Well, what else do we say? may his soul rest peacefully...
