The Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Port Harcourt, the state capital, hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission announced the result of the presidential and National Assembly elections in the state, Premium Times reports.

In a terse statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, George Feyi, the governor said the curfew will hold from 7p.m. to 6a.m.
"The curfew will continue till further notice," a part of the statement said.

The declaration of the curfew comes amidst heightened tension occasioned by the conduct of last Saturday's election in the state.

Mr. Amaechi and the All Progressives Congress had boycotted the polls over the failure of INEC to supply result sheets to many polling units especially in the party strongholds.

But the elections continued despite the boycott and the result of both the presidential and National Assembly polls were announced at about 2pm amidst protests and call for cancellation by the APC.

Police recover N9m from dead armed robbers who raided Owo banks

The police in Ondo State have recovered N9 million from the six of the fifty armed robbers who raided four banks at Owo last week.

Vanguard reports that, two police women and four others, including an ASP and seven civilians were killed by the robbers who stormed the banks at about 4pm last Friday.

Also shot dead by the robbers were a bank manager and his deputy who reportedly refused to cooperate with them on arrival at the bank

Report had it that the robbers trailed some cash that were deposited in the banks, in view of last Saturday’s elections. The six robbers were shot dead by policemen who engaged them in a shoot out that lasted for two hours.

The two women police and the ASP were shot dead at the police station on arrival by the robbers who destroyed the station with gunshots.

Some vehicles, including that of the DPO of the station, was taken away but later recovered hours later after by the police. 23 assorted fire arms, including 9000rounds of ammunition, 11 dynamites, 100 magazines, ten smoke hand grenade, three steel helments, police berets and uniforms, nine exotic vehicles, were recovered from the robbers.

Confirming the incident, the Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, said the command received information that armed men numbering over fifty in several vehicles, wielding sophisticated weapons, had slipped into the state. Eke said the robbers took over the police stations and four banks According to him, a formidable reinforcement, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police from Akure, the state capital, in charge of operations was dispatched .

After intense and protracted exchange of fire with the robbers, one of them was arrested alive, while six others lost their lives from gun shot wounds. The police commissioner said one Sony video camera with which the robbers recorded their dastardly act by themselves were equally recovered. Eke vowed to arrest those that “managed to escape with bullet wounds towards the boundary of Ondo with Edo/Kogi states.’

Woman stabs husband to death over PDP, APC presidential candidates

Woman stabs husband to death over PDP, APC presidential candidates

Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old pregnant woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death during a quarrel over who would emerge winner between the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidates, while voting was on-going in Ejigbo area of the state.

Vanguard reports that ,the incident, which threw the densely populated area into disarray, occurred at about 12noon inside the couple’s one room apartment at 81 Military zonejunction.

There were different accounts on how tragedy struck. A version of the account said the couple had divergent views on their choice of presidential candidates. While the husband was said to have decided to vote for the PDP, his wife, simply called Onyiyechi, reportedly chose to vote for the presidential candidate of the APC. An argument which degenerated into a fight over whose choice would hold sway reportedly ensued between them.

In the process, Onyiyechi allegedly stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife in the chest region.
Another version said the deceased, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, told his pregnant wife to take the okro she was grating inside the room, to the veranda which also served as kitchen , an instruction she reportedly disobeyed, following which an argument which led to a fight occurred.

When Vanguard visited the scene of the incident yesterday, the couple’s apartment was under lock . Their neighbours however described the suspect as an amicable person who had never quarreled with anyone since she moved into the building.
One of the tenants who spoke on condition of anonymity told Vanguard that they did not witness how the suspect allegedly stabbed her husband.
But he explained that :
“ We were all outside waiting to vote when Onyiyechi rushed out, shouting for help. Out of curiosity, we all ran inside, only to discover blood all over the ground, on entering their apartment.
”On closer observation, we noticed that the blood was from her husband chest region. We met him on the ground. Before we could rush him to the hospital, he gave up the ghost.
Perhaps, he would have survived the attack had Onyiyechi called for help early. From all indication, it was clear that she attempted to manage the situation immediately the incident occurred. It was when she discovered that the situation had overwhelmed her that she raised alarm.
”I do not know the name of her husband. We only know that of his wife, who we fondly call Onyiyechi. The irony of this matter is that she is not cantankerous.
”She has never beaten a little child, let alone to fight with any neighbor. Again on that day, we saw both of them together. They were seen sitting outside, one hour before the incident occurred. Policemen from Ejigbo later came to remove the corpse to the Isolo morgue”
