Absence of serotonin alters development, function of brain circuits

Absence of serotonin alters development, function of brain circuits

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have created the first complete model to describe the role that serotonin plays in brain development and structure. Serotonin, also called 5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT], is an important neuromodulator of brain development and the structure and function of neuronal (nerve cell) circuits.

"Our goal in the project was to close the gap in knowledge that exists on role of serotonin in the brain cortex, particularly as it concerns brain circuitry, its electrical activity and function," said Roberto Fernández Galán, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. "For the first time, we can provide a complete description of an animal model from genes to behavior--including at the level of neuronal network activity, which has been ignored in most studies to date."

Dr. Galán and his team used high-density multi-electrode arrays in a mouse model of serotonin deficiency to record and analyze neuronal activity. The study supports the importance of the serotonin which is specified and maintained by a specific gene, the Pet-1 gene -- for normal functioning of the neurons, synapses and networks in the cortex, as well as proper development of brain circuitry. Serotonin abnormalities have been linked to autism and epilepsy, depression and anxiety.

By more fully elucidating the role of serotonin in the brain, this study may contribute to a better understanding of the development or treatment of these conditions.

"By looking at the circuit level of the brain, we now have new insight into how the brain becomes wired and sensitive to changing serotonin levels." added Dr. Galán.

Do you think metal particles could be the clean fuel of the future?

Do you think metal particles could be the clean fuel of the future?

Stabilized flames of different metal powders burn with air, compared to a methane-air flame.

Can you imagine a future where your car is fueled by iron powder instead of gasoline?
Metal powders, produced using clean primary energy sources, could provide a more viable long-term replacement for fossil fuels than other widely discussed alternatives, such as hydrogen, biofuels or batteries, according to a study in the Dec. 15 issue of the journal Applied Energy.

"Technologies to generate clean electricity -- primarily solar and wind power -- are being developed rapidly; but we can't use that electricity for many of the things that oil and gas are used for today, such as transportation and global energy trade," notes McGill University professor Jeffrey Bergthorson, lead author of the new study.

"Biofuels can be part of the solution, but won't be able to satisfy all the demand; hydrogen requires big, heavy fuel tanks and is explosive, and batteries are too bulky and don't store enough energy for many applications," says Bergthorson, a mechanical engineering professor and Associate Director of the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design at McGill. "Using metal powders as recyclable fuels that store clean primary energy for later use is a very promising alternative solution."

The Applied Energy paper, co-authored by Bergthorson with five other McGill researchers and a European Space Agency scientist in the Netherlands, lays out a novel concept for using tiny metal particles -- similar in size to fine flour or icing sugar -- to power external-combustion engines.

Unlike the internal-combustion engines used in gasoline-powered cars, external-combustion engines use heat from an outside source to drive an engine. External-combustion engines, modern versions of the coal-fired steam locomotives that drove the industrial era, are widely used to generate power from nuclear, coal or biomass fuels in power stations.

The idea of burning metal powders is nothing new -- they've been used for centuries in fireworks, for instance. Since the mid-20th century, they've also been used in rocket propellants, such as the space shuttle's solid-fuel booster rockets. But relatively little research has been done in recent decades on the properties of metal flames, and the potential for metal powders to be used as a recyclable fuel in a wide range of applications has been largely overlooked by scientists.

The idea put forward by the McGill team takes advantage of an important property of metal powders: when burned, they react with air to form stable, nontoxic solid-oxide products that can be collected relatively easily for recycling -- unlike the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels that escape into the atmosphere.

Using a custom-built burner, the McGill researchers demonstrated that a flame can be stabilized in a flow of tiny metal particles suspended in air. Flames from metal powders "appear quite similar" to those produced by burning hydrocarbon fuels, the researchers write. "The energy and power densities of the proposed metal-fueled heat engines are predicted to be close to current fossil-fueled internal combustion engines, making them an attractive technology for a future low-carbon society."

Iron could be the primary candidate for this purpose, according to the study. Millions of tons of iron powders are already produced annually for the metallurgy, chemical and electronic industries. And iron is readily recyclable with well-established technologies, and some novel techniques can avoid the carbon dioxide emissions associated with traditional iron production using coal.

While laboratory work at McGill and elsewhere has shown that the use of metal fuels with heat engines is technically feasible, no one has yet demonstrated the idea in practice. The next step toward turning the lab findings into usable technology, therefore, will be "to build a prototype burner and couple it to a heat engine," Bergthorson says.

"Developing metal recycling processes that don't involve CO2 emissions is also critical."
Co-author David Jarvis, head of strategic and emerging technologies at the European Space Agency, adds: "We are very interested in this technology because it opens the door to new propulsion systems that can be used in space and on earth.

The shift away from fossil fuels for vehicle propulsion is a clear trend for the future. While not perfected and commercialized today, the use of low-cost metallic fuels, like iron powder, is a worthy alternative to petrol and diesel fuels. If we can demonstrate, for the first time, an iron-fueled engine with almost zero CO2 emissions, we believe this would then trigger even more innovation and cost reduction in the near future."

Research on metal combustion at McGill has been funded over the past 20 years by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Department of National Defence, the U.S. Defence Threat Reduction Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, Martec Ltd. (Halifax, NS), and the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design.

Donald Trump's Daughter Ivanka Trump Stuns in New Photoshoot, Admits She Doesn't Always Agree With Dad

Ivanka Trump definitely has that pregnancy glow.
The 34-year-old businesswoman covers the latest issue of Town & Country, looking gorgeous in a fitted black gown that shows off her burgeoning baby bump. Ivanka announced she's expecting her third child with her husband, real estate developer Jared Kushner, in September. In the new interview, Ivanka talks candidly about her father, 69-year-old Donald Trump, and his controversial presidential run.

"He is running for the highest elective office in this country, and arguably the world," Ivanka says. "It's amazing to see how his message has resonated and what he’s been able to accomplish as a non-politician with a very strong point of view."

"He's my father and I love him and I fully support him," Ivanka adds, although she points out that she's technically not part of his campaign. "I'm always there for him if it's helpful."
Still, Ivanka admits that she doesn't always agree with some of his more controversial behavior.

"Well, I'm his daughter. In a political capacity, I don't [admonish him]," she shares. "It's his campaign. I don't feel that's my role. But I would challenge him as a child. That's what children do. [My daughter] Arabella challenges me every day. People ask me, do I ever disagree with my father? It would be a little strange if I didn't."

Though when it comes to accusations that her father is sexist, Ivanka is his biggest defender.
"You could also list a few comments he's made about men that are unflattering," she says about headline-making comments he's made about Fox anchor Megyn Kelly and about fellow presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina.

"I think he's highly gender-neutral. If he doesn't like someone he'll articulate that, and I think it's also part of what resonates about him. He'll say what he's thinking. I think that's very refreshing, because with most politicians I've witnessed, you have no idea if what's coming out of their mouths is married to their viewpoints."

She would even go so far as to call Donald a feminist.
"He 100 percent believes in equality of gender, so, yes, absolutely -- socially, politically, and economically," she says. "He has confidence in women to do any job that a man can do, and my whole life has been proof of that."

In September, ET caught up with another daughter of a presidential hopeful -- 35-year-old Chelsea Clinton -- who dished on her surprisingly close friendship with Ivanka.

Lai Mohammed must explain Borno, Adamawa Boko Haram attacks – Gov Fayose

Lai Mohammed must explain Borno, Adamawa Boko Haram attacks – Gov Fayose

Read the press statement below...
Governor Ayodele Fayose has described the Sunday and Monday attacks by Boko Haram in Borno and Adamawa States as disheartening and an indictment on the APC-led federal government, saying that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed must explain to Nigerians how the same Boko Haram that he said had been “technically defeated” could carry out such daring and deadly attacks.

The Ekiti State governor, who commiserated with the government and people of Borno and Adamawa States, especially those who lost their loved ones in the attacks, said; “in other countries of the world, the government would have taken responsibility for deceiving and misleading the people and apologised.”

In a release issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose asked; “If Boko Haram had indeed been technically defeated as Lai Mohammed made Nigerians to believe, what do we call the Sunday and Monday attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State capital and Madagali, Adamawa State? “Should we say that the ‘technically’ defeated Boko Haram insurgents attacked Borno and Adamawa States, killing close to 100 Nigerians and injuring several others?

“Only Lai Mohammed who told Nigerians that Boko Haram had been technically defeated can tell us what happened and he must have to explain how ‘technically defeated’ insurgents could carry out such deadly attacks.”

Governor Fayose, who urged the APC-led federal government to stop deceiving Nigerians, especially on the Boko Haram insurgency and its anti-corruption fight said; “This governance by deceit must stop. Nigerians deserve to know the truth concerning how they are being governed.”

He challenged the federal government to tell Nigerians how much had been spent on security matters since June, this year, saying; “As it is today, they are just using the anti-corruption fight to shift the attention of Nigerians from their failure to fulfil the promises they made while seeking votes.

They are deceiving Nigerians while diverting Security Vote under the pretence of fighting Boko Haram insurgency. “It has therefore become pertinent that they are told expressly to stop behaving as if they are still the opposition. They should realise that election is over and it is already seven months that they assumed office.”

Unbelievable! Mariah Carey appears in bikini

Unbelievable! Mariah Carey appears in bikini

The temperature must have been pushing zero, but that wasn’t going to stop Mariah Carey from taking a Christmas dip while on holiday in Aspen, Colorado. The singer didn’t seem like she was feeling the cold as she showed off her incredible figure in a golden bikini, standing knee deep in a hot tub.

In the snap, which was posted on Boxing Day, she can be seen with snow on her hands. The caption is made up of the following hashtags: “traditions”, “aspen”, “winter moments”, and “sending all my love to lambs.”

The superstar singer has been enjoying a family holiday with her four-year-old twins Morrocan and Monroe. She also thought to have been joined by her ex husband Nick Cannon in time for Chritmas Day.

She’s been keeping fans updated as to what her and the children have been getting up to, including making gingerbread houses, gaving fun in snow, and getting a visit from the big man, Santa Claus himself – which Mariah changed into a Christmas onesie for.

Earlier this month there was speculation Nick may have plans to celebrate Christmas with his ex, after he told Ellen Degeneres that they will “always be family” despite their split. He added: “It’s just so important when, if a marriage does not work out and you have kids, to show them love and not have somebody talking badly about the other person it’s great.”

What’s not known, however, is if Nick got to meet Mariah’s new love, James Packer, who was spotted in Aspen with the singer a week ago. The pair explored the Colorado town together and were also spotted in the VIP section at the World Snow Polo Championship, where they held hands and cosied up together to watch the sporting event.

What’s certain is that this was a great festive season for Mariah, who has always loved Christmas, but this year was looking forward to it more than ever this year, judging by the comments she made on ITV’s Lorraine, a few weeks ago. She said: “Christmas is the best time of the year for me. Even better with having the twins, absolutely, couldn’t be better. [I’m] so excited to have Christmas this year, they really finally understand a little bit more about the holiday. I’m like finally! They’re only four.”

CNN anchor Poppy Harlow, who announced her first pregnancy in late November, gave viewers a scare when she passed out live on air on Monday morning while discussing a breaking news story.
Though you do not see Harlow onscreen, you can hear her speech start to slur and a gasp from off-screen:

“For all of you on Twitter, who are asking if I’m OK, thank you so much. I got a little hot and I passed out for a moment,” the 33-year-old explained when she reappeared on air minutes later. “I am fine.”
Harlow reiterated this when she later tweeted that she had been taken to the hospital. “Our little girl due this spring is doing just fine,” she reassured her followers. “Was a scare but we are both ok.”
One possible explanation? According to the Mayo Clinic, changes in the circulation system during pregnancy can lead to lightheadedness and dizziness.

FG to connect Otuoke to seaports by rail-- Amachi

FG to connect Otuoke to seaports by rail-- Amachi

In its determined effort to link up states by rail transport, the Federal Government has made Otuoke community in Bayelsa State one of the towns that will benefit from the multibillion naira project expected to turn the country’s economy round when completed.

Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, gave the hint last week in Lagos after a facility tour of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

Otuoke, the home town of former President Goodluck Jonathan, according to Amaechi, would be among the towns through which the East-West rail project would connect, commencing its journey from the Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River State.

The minister, whose mention of Otuoke in his presentation, elicited laughter, disclosed this while speaking to news men after his inspection of facilities at the airport, where he gave a rundown of the various towns to be linked up through the rail project.

According to him, the rail line would run thus: Obudu-Calabar (Cross River State)-Uyo-Ikot Ekpene (Akwa Ibom)-Aba (Abia)-Port Harcourt (Rivers)-Yenegoa-Otuoke-Yenegoa (Bayelsa)-Ughelli (Delta)-Benin (Edo)-Asaba (Delta)-Ijebu Ode-Sagamu (Ogun)-Lagos, terminating at the Lagos port of Apapa.

He said that in all cases, the rail links must terminate at the seaports, even as he announced the Lagos-Kano line to link: Lagos-Ibadan-Ilorin-Minna-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano.

The minister added that the commencement of work on the rail lines, to be made of standard gauge, would start from the first quarter of 2016 and told the media to hold the government accountable for the pronouncements.

He pointed out that the rail project alone would create 250,000 direct jobs for the teeming Nigerian unemployed youths and more indirect others.

The former Rivers State Governor regretted that the country’s rail system had been down because of decay resulting from ‘poor policy initiatives’, adding that the Buhari administration was set to revive the sector and give a breather to the roads.

On port development, he said it was a private sector-driven venture and that the administration would run it as such and assured that the bills that would drive the sector would soon be sponsored and seen to logical conclusion at the National Assembly (NASS).

According to him, the bills include the National Transport Commission (NTC), Ports and Harbours, Railway Act Amendment, among others.
He pointed out that one thing that could actually galvanise the sector for its huge potentials to be fully tapped, was the establishment of a national carrier, which presently was absent.

On the perennial Apapa gridlock, Amaechi said he had visited the Lagos ports but to his surprise, could not see the much talked about traffic melee, saying that on the day of his visit, he was looking forward to encountering it but never saw anything like that.

He however promised that his ministry would work closely with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), critical stakeholders, Ministry of Works and Lagos State government to find a permanent solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will be restructured to perform its core function, noting that the agency should have nothing to do with the establishment of universities. Minister of Transportation, Amaechi, made the declaration at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, media briefing.

He said the agency was a disappointment as it had left its main functions to dabble into other issues like the establishment of universities and institutes of studies; hence there was the need for a total overhaul of the agency.

The minister, who spoke while briefing journalists at the end of the tour, however did not say if the government was going to discontinue with the first ever maritime university at Kurutie, Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State.

The establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) has been a subject of controversy in recent times following the eye-popping N13 billion said to have been expended for the acquisition of the site from the community.

However, the community recently came out to say that what they got out of the said amount was N360 million compensation and threw its weight behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s probe of the N13 billion alleged to have been paid to Government Oweize Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, for the land acquisition.

Football star Ozil now showing his true greatness at Arsenal – Giroud

Arsenal’s Ozil now showing his true greatness – Giroud

Olivier Giroud believes in-form Arsenal teammate Mesut Ozil is now showing his true class after the German’s match-winning performance helped send the Gunners top of the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth on Monday.

Ozil, 27, made the first goal, scored the second and created a host of other chances as Arsenal recovered from their 4-0 drubbing at Southampton by beating the Cherries at the Emirates.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said Ozil’s performance reminded him of club legend Dennis Bergkamp, hailing the former Real Madrid star as an “exceptional” and “complete” player after watching him pick up his 16th assist of the season for Gabriel’s opening goal.
In the second half Giroud laid on Ozil’s third goal of the campaign and afterward the France striker also praised the playmaker.

“He got a lot of criticism from the start because he wasn’t efficient enough,” Giroud told L’Equipe. “Now he’s showing what a great player he is.

“His stats are impressive. He breathes football.
“With a player like that, you know you’re going to get at least one goal chance per game. It’s a joy to play with him.”

Giroud, 29, has been one of the main beneficiaries of Ozil’s keen eye for a pass, having already found the net 10 times in this season’s Premier League.

The former Montpellier forward was happy to get his first assist of the campaign on Monday, exchanging passes with Ozil by flicking the ball over the defence with the outside of his boot to tee up the World Cup winner for a simple finish past the goalkeeper.

“It’s almost as enjoyable as scoring, especially since it was for Mesut who’s laid on a few goals for me this season,” Giroud said. “For once, we switched roles.”

Arsenal’s win over Bournemouth saw them move ahead of Leicester City in the table, although Claudio Ranieri’s side will go back to the summit if they beat Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Gunners are seeking to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 and Giroud was relieved that they had got back on track after a poor display at Southampton on Boxing Day.
“We felt very quickly that we weren’t good,” he said of the Southampton game.

“In a season there are matches like that where you don’t perform. We’ve used up one of our wild cards.
“But at the same time it’s better to lose 4-0 once than 1-0 four times.”

30 feared dead in Adamawa suicide bomb explosions

30 feared dead in Adamawa suicide bomb explosions

It was a Monday of tears and pain for residents of Madagali Town, Adamawa State when suspected female suicide bombers attacked a busy motor park in the town killing about 60 persons, leaving many more injured.

An eyewitness witness, Danladi Buba, said the two female suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) near the motor park around 9:00 a.m. Also, an explosion in a Maiduguri mosque yesterday left about 20 people dead.

Meanwhile, the death toll of Maiduguri multiple bomb blasts in Borno State on Sunday, yesterday hit 52 with 124 injured and being treated at the state Specialist Hospital, Umaru Shehu Ultra-Modern Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri.

Out of the 85 injured ones brought to the state specialist hospital, nine were, however, referred to UMTH, because of their higher degree burns and gunshot wounds.

These were disclosed yesterday by the Chief Medical Directors of the Specialist Hospital and Umaru Shehu Hospital, Dr. Laraba Bello and Dr. Salisu Kwaya Bura, while briefing Governor Kashim Shettima on the state of patients at the hospitals.
On the Madagali attack, Buba said:“ Very many people, about 30 people were killed with 16 others injured.”

When contacted, the Brigade Commander of 28 Task Force Brigade, Mubi, Brigadier-General Victor Ezugwu, confirmed the incident, saying though, the exact casualty figure was yet to be established.
“Two female suicide bombers struck at a motor park in Madagali and detonated their devices, and we lost some beloved countrymen,” Ezugwu said. He also said the injured had been taken to hospital while the military had cordoned off the area. The brigade commander said the situation had been brought under control and that normalcy would soon return though he stressed that soldiers and other security agents were on high alert.

The Adamawa House of Assembly member representing Madagali, Mr. Emmanuel Tandu, told The Guardian that local hunters who participated in the rescue efforts after the incident told him that they picked up 12 bodies and 19 injured persons.
The National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) boss in Adamawa, Saad Bello, also confirmed the attack.

The explosion in the Maiduguri mosque went off as residents speculated that a fleeing Boko Haram bomber had abandoned an IED in the area during Sunday night’s attack on the city.
A police officer, who spoke anonymously on the matter said the victims had gathered to investigate if a bomb was truly abandoned in the mosque as was being speculated.

“I have never seen such foolishness that people would go peeping into a mosque to find out if truly there was an explosive device left in the place.
Unfortunately, there was a bomb in the mosque and when it exploded, over 20 persons were killed and many injured,” he said.

But another account differed, explaining that the victims were relaxing around the mosque after prayers as they are wont to. According to Malam Suleiman, a primary school teacher: “The people normally sit down around the mosque in the morning. It is like a meeting point where neighbours converge to relax. After the morning prayers they just sat down outside the mosque as usual and then the bomb went off. It was not suicide bombing like that of last night. It may have been planted by insurgents fleeing from troops on Sunday night.”

A civil servant Yunusa Abdullahi, who lives in Jiddari Polo area of the city, said aside from the mosque attack, two girls detonated explosives at a neighbourhood called Buraburin.

“A man saw two girls walking around and he tried to caution them to be careful as it was dangerous for them to be wandering about. We understand the man had hardly finished speaking when the two girls detonated the devices strapped on their bodies, killing the man and some other persons,” Abdullahi said.

He continued: “Since last night, residents have been finding undetonated bombs believed to have been abandoned by Boko Haram insurgents. It seems that while they were engaging soldiers in Sunday’s attack, they also used that as a diversion to bring in these female suicide bombers who they have turned loose in Maiduguri. For some time, we had been spared the death and destruction by these suicide bombers but now we do not know what will happen. We are under siege and we don’t know how many of these bombs or these female suicide bombers were sneaked into Maiduguri,” he said.

According to Dr. Laraba , 32 bodies were deposited in the hospital morgue, while 85 injured people were admitted yesterday with nine of the patients referred to UMTH for further treatments for burns and multiple fractures.

At the Umaru Shehu Hospital, Dr. Bura also said that 39 injured persons were brought in yesterday, with one pregnant woman giving up the ghost.

“We were able to discharge some of the injured persons, after they had been treated for minor burns and cuts. Right now as I speak to you, your excellency, 15 are already admitted for treatment for higher
degree burns and gunshot wounds sustained in Sunday and Monday’s multiple bomb blasts at Bakkassi, Sabon Gari and Jiddari-Polo wards of Maiduguri,” Bura said.

He and his colleagues confirmed to The Guardian that 52 people died along while 124 were injured.
On yesterday’s mosque blast, Sadik Mohammed, a patient, said: “We are the only two survivors of Monday’s mosque blast. Three of my siblings and my father were killed.”

He said it was a suspected female suicide bomber who attacked them with her strapped explosives, while they were praying in the mosque located behind the CBN quarters, Maiduguri.

The General Officer Commanding of 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun yesterday at the press briefing at the Media Centre of Operation Lafiya Dole said that 26 residents died, with 86 others injured in Sunday and Monday’s multiple blasts.
Reacting to the blasts, Governor Shettima after visiting the injured in the hospitals, condemned the incessant attacks and killings in the state.

His words: “We will urge our people to be extra vigilant and to report all suspicious movements to the nearest military formations. Our head is bloody but remains unbowed. We believe that the worst is over and God willing, we shall strive to give hope to the hopeless; and a cause of joy to the down-trodden. That will not deter us; we will continue to preach peace, dialogue, tolerance and understanding. But for these lunatics, by the grace of God, their days are numbered. They can inflict pains on us certainly, but our spirit remains high.”

President Buhari Gives Details On How He Intends To Pay 5,000 Monthly Stipend To Poor Nigerians

President-Buhari-presenting-2016-budget-300x185

President Muhammadu Buhari intends to fulfill his promise of paying the poor and vulnerable N5,000 monthly.

The President said his intentions was to ease the hard life Nigerians are facing and make them independent by helping them acquire small and medium scale trades that will sustain them in times of need.
The President said his 5,000 monthly to the poor will go a long way in helping many Nigerians cope with the hard times. He assured all that the disbursement and procedure will be fair and true to the tenets of justice and equity.

The President revealed all these during an interview session with Mansur Liman of the BBC Hausa service on Christmas eve. He stressed that his administration will ensure that monies meant for the poor would not be diverted by heartless and dubious politicians who do not have the people’s interest at heart. He warned all politicians who might have harboured the thoughts of stealing or engaging in corruption during his administration to have a rethink as anyone caught will be made to face the full weight of the law.

He said: “It is not possible for everyone needing it to get it; but the Federal Government has said it would collaborate with the states and local governments. At the local government level, almost everyone knows each other. It would be easy to identify those to give who would go into trading and how to get it back. It would be like a cooperative and we all know how it operates. Also, state governments would identify those who have capacity to employ more people and all we need to do is to empower them. Our people already know how to go about implementing these modalities to create employment for the citizens.”
The president assured Nigerians that he will deliver on his campaign promises.

See Why Lai Mohammed must be fired

See Why Lai Mohammed must be fired

Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf was the Minister of Information in the dying days of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq. Nicknamed “Comical Ali” by British tabloids, al-Sahaf made a fool of himself during the Iraqi war by constantly fabricating victories of the Iraqi army, even as territory after territory fell to the American-led allied forces.

What was so ridiculous about him was that his lies were so blatant, only fools could believe them.  Even when American tanks rolled into Baghdad, Comical Ali declared: “There is no presence of the American columns in the city of Baghdad at all. We besieged them and we killed most of them. Today, the tide has turned. We are destroying them. The Americans are going to surrender or be burned in their tanks.”

Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, is Nigeria’s home-grown “Comical Ali.”  It would not be unfair to fashion him as “the Minister of FABU.” Barely two months of assuming office, Mohammed has established himself as an instrument of cheap propaganda and disinformation.  On internet blogs today, he is now generally referred to by his traducers as “Liar Mohammed.”  Without a doubt, he has earned this sobriquet by his penchant to be extremely economical with the truth.

Lai Mohammed’s tall tales have now reached epidemic proportions.  It is a contradiction in terms that a government that claims to be anti-corruption, and a president that boasts to be a man of integrity, should have a “Comical Ali” as its face and spokesman.  It is doubtful that Mohammed can stop being himself.  However, if President Buhari is interested in redeeming his now battered image, he needs to admit he made a big error of judgment in appointing Mohammed as a minister.

Lai Mohammed must be fired immediately.  Barring which, the only honourable thing left for the Honourable Minister to do is to resign.  A Minister of Information should not be allowed to become a Minister of Misinformation.

Fictitious Victory
On 23 December, 2015, Mohammed told a meeting of editorial heads of media houses in Lagos that the Nigerian military has met President Buhari’s deadline to defeat Boko Haram before 31 December, 2015.
Said Mohammed: “Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won. Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops. They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Rather than call his minister to order, President Buhari backed him up in the bid to white-wash the gaffe of predicting Boko Haram would be defeated before the end of the year.  He told the BBC: “Boko Haram has reverted to using improvised explosive devices. They have now been reduced to that. But articulated conventional attacks on centres of communication and populations.. they are no longer capable of doing that effectively.

So I think technically we have won the war because people are going back into their neighbourhoods. Boko Haram as an organised fighting force, I assure you, that we have dealt with them.”
The president conveniently forgot he had said at his inaugural address that: “We cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents.”

We have heard nothing about the Chibok girls.  Nevertheless, the president now says Boko Haram has been technically defeated.  Are we therefore to conclude that the Chibok girls have also been technically rescued?

Boko Haram Response
The victory declarations of Lai Mohammed and President Buhari turned out not only to be palpably false, but outrightly dangerous.   Just two days after Mohammed’s declaration, the Boko Haram who he says “can no longer carry out any spectacular attack” attacked Kimba in Borno State.  They killed 14 hapless people and razed the village to the ground.  According to eye-witness reports, “not a single house was spared in the arson.”

One day later, a coordinated fighting unit of Boko Haram infantry attacked Maiduguri.  They came in a military convoy, precisely the manner the president boasted is now impossible.  They then dug in for a pitched battle against the Nigerian army.  Thereafter, two female suicide-bombers detonated explosives in the Jiddari area of Maiduguri, with casualty figures yet to be determined.

There is no doubt these attacks were direct responses to APC’s vain propaganda.  Boko Haram decided to give the lie to the bombastic statements that it has been defeated either technically or in actuality.  To drive home the point beyond reasonable doubt, the insurgents chose to attack Maiduguri, the very command and control epicentre of Nigeria’s military operations in the North-east.

Clearly, the defeat of Boko Haram only exists as figments in the imaginations of APC propagandists.  Having won the election by manipulating the press, they now seek to govern by employing a cacophony of jobless youth whose charge is to post “SAI Buhari” comments on as many internet blogs as possible. They also have the mandate to attack anyone who refuses to buy the many-splendored FABUS of the APC government.

APC’s bogus propaganda is partly responsible for the deaths and destruction in Kimba, Aladuwari and Maiduguri, the full extent of which are yet to be determined.  The false victory procession of APC chieftains provoked the Boko Haram to contradict them at the cost of Nigerian lives.  It is way too early to call for the impeachment of Mr. President.  But it is high time to call for the retirement of Lai Mohammed.  We must not allow this local “Comical Ali” to continue to use Nigerian lives to score cheap political points.

While the APC was busy celebrating the fictitious death of Boko Haram, the New York-based Institute for Economics and Peace declared in its latest Global Terrorism Index that Boko Haram “has become the most deadly terrorist group in the world.”   The day before Mohammed’s bombast, UNICEF declared that Boko Haram has succeeded in keeping over one million children out of school, warning that this is likely to add fuel to the insurgency by radicalizing the youth in the North-east.

Campaign Recantations
It was Lai Mohammed who told Nigerians the promises of the APC during the election were actually not from the APC.  The APC denied its key presidential campaign documents: “My Covenant with Nigerians” and “One Hundred Things Buhari Will Do in 100 Days.”  Buhari himself presents one of the documents in the first person, saying: “The covenant is derived from the manifesto of my party, the All Progressives Congress. It however represents my pledge to you all when I become your president.”

But once he became president, Mohammed denied them.  He swore that: “Buhari never promised to do anything in 100 days, that’s the honest truth.”  However, when APC Senators were forced to vote against their own campaign promise to provide N5,000 monthly to 25 million unemployed Nigerians, Mohammed declared that the government already has 1.4 trillion naira recovered from banks through the TSA ready to fulfil the promise.  He said we should expect it in the 2016 budget.

These are his words: “The non-implementation of the payment policy so far is due to the fact that it was not included in the 2015 budget. The Muhammadu Buhari administration has been busy putting in place measures that will make it possible to start the implementation of this project.”
This has turned out as usual to be another tissue of lies.  The 2016 budget has now been announced, and there is nothing about the N5000 stipend for the 25 million unemployed.

Presidential Doublespeak
The government of President Buhari is replete with contradictions and doublespeak.
At the APC South-East rally in Owerri, Buhari declared he would make the naira equal to the dollar if voted into office.  He continued: “It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than 230 to one dollar. This does not speak well for the nation’s economy.”  How does it speak for the economy now that the value of the naira has dropped under Buhari to 280 to the dollar?

Buhari said: “Boko Haram is a typical example of small fires causing large fires. An eccentric and unorthodox preacher with a tiny following was given posthumous fame and following by his extra-judicial murder at the hands of the police.”  What then are we to say about the extra-judicial massacre of over 300 Shiite Muslims in Zaria at the hands of the Nigerian army under this Buhari administration?

Buhari said during the campaign: “You are all my people; I will treat you all as mine. I will work for those who voted for me, voted against me and those who didn’t vote at all.”  Then he said after the campaign: “The constituents (that) gave me 97% cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5%.”

On his election, the president said: “Our long night is over and a new dawn has come… Democracy and rule of law will be put in place.”  “I pledge myself and the government to the rule of law, in which none shall be so above the law that they are not subject to its dictates, and none shall be so below it that they are not availed of its protection.”  But under his administration, democracy and the rule of law has continued to be violated.  The DSS ignores court verdicts with impunity, as happened in the case of Dasuki and Kanu.

Justice Muazu Pindigi was summarily replaced by Justice Ambrosa as chairman of the Rivers state governorship petitions tribunal and PDP’s victory was quickly annulled.  Pindigi said: “The Supreme Court has said that for an election to be annulled, the petitioner has to prove that elections didn’t hold at the polling units where the winner was returned elected. I’m not sure that the Ambrosa’s judgment arrived through that route.”

During the election, Buhari declared the maintenance of the presidential fleet of aircrafts a colossal waste of money.  He said: “For me, when we come into office, all these waste will be blocked and properly channeled into our economy.”  However, since he became president, not a single plane has been sold.  Billions of naira continue to be spent as the president has gone on one international junket after the other.
