Over 50 million Nigerians defecate openly – UNICEF

Over 50 million Nigerians defecate openly – UNICEF

Defecation
The United Nations Children’s Educational Fund, UNICEF, has disclosed that over 50million Nigerians do not have access to toilets hence resort to open defecation. Wao!
The world body also revealed that Nigeria ranks among the five countries in the world with the greatest rates of open defecation.

This was made known in a report issued yesterday by Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, UNICEF ‘A Field Office’ Communication Officer (Advocacy, Media and External Relations) on behalf of Sanjay Wijesekera, head of UNICEF’s global water, sanitation and hygiene programmes, to coincide with World Toilet Day.
The report titled, Improving Nutrition Outcomes with Better Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, pointed out the emerging evidence of links between inadequate sanitation and malnutrition among children.
Wijesekera was quoted as saying that “Nigeria loses over 150,000 children to diarrhea annually.
After pneumonia, it is the biggest killer of Nigeria’s under-fives; 88 per cent of diarrhoea cases in Nigeria are attributed to unsafe water and sanitation. Where rates of toilet use are low, rates of diarrhoea tend to be high.
“Intestinal parasites such as roundworm, whipworm and hookworm are transmitted through contaminated soil in areas where open defecation is practiced. Hookworm is a major cause of anaemia in pregnant women, leading to malnourished, underweight babies.
“We need to bring concrete and innovative solutions to the problem of where people go to the toilet, otherwise we are failing millions of our poorest and most vulnerable children.”

San Pedro: Teacher suspected of sex with students appears in court

San Pedro: Teacher suspected of sex with students appears in court

Former San Pedro High School substitute Biology teacher, Michelle Yeh appeared in Long Beach court yesterday afternoon 20th November, 2015 facing charges of sex-related allegations involving teenage boys.

She was accused of sending 70 love text messages to her students.  If convicted, she will be imprisoned for 9 months. Does this mean that our children are not safe in the hands of their teachers at school?

" We started having sex on the bed, but it was making a lot of noise, so we laid down on the carpet." One of the students alleged.

Do You Know What Terror Groups Use As Greatest Weapon?

Do You Know What Terror Groups Use As Greatest Weapon?

Terrorists use technology to operate under the radar. (Yahoo News)

Terrorists in the modern age have a tool in their arsenal that allows them to operate under the radar: technology.

After a series of unexpected and devastating attacks, counterterrorism officials believe that it’s getting harder to track ISIS because they “go dark” through the use of encryption messaging and apps.
The act of encryption, when a message is encoded so others can’t read it, is centuries old.

Think of Egyptians and cryptography or Julius Caesar and the Caesar cipher. But now, the Internet and tech advancements have propelled encryption into the digital age. Most encryption programs transform information into a series of letters and numbers, which can only be opened with a key. One message can have multiple codes, each with a different key, making it a nearly impossible to crack.

We use encryption often in our daily lives when we go online, like when we shop or bank. But databases exist that can be used to really cover a person’s tracks. Software like Tor — originally developed by the U.S. government to protect private intelligence information — uses an anonymous network of servers to create a space on the “dark Web” where people with access are untraceable online.

Encryption apps like Apple’s iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram use end-to-end encryption, meaning only the people sending and receiving the messages can see them. Many of these apps have settings that allow messages to disappear after a set time or to prevent messages from being forwarded.

Terror groups have encrypted their information for years, but recently, the technology has become more secure and accessible. Government intelligence agencies want tech companies to leave a flaw, or “back door,” in their programs, so they have a way to decrypt messages if needed. But cybersecurity experts warn against this, saying it leaves the products vulnerable to hackers.

Even with encrypted communication, law enforcement and intelligence agencies are able to gather critical clues and information, but it can be more difficult. I think everyone needs to know about encrypted messaging apps.

PDP is suffering from Induced Hallucination -- APC Scribe

PDP is suffering from Induced Hallucination -- APC Scribe

The leadership of APC has described as "induced hallucination" the allegations leveled against it by PDP that the party was planning to kill some PDP leaders including its acting National Chairman, Uche Secondus, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu amongst others.

PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh while addressing newsmen at Legacy House in Abuja on November 18, 2015, accused APC of plotting to kill some of their key members following the attempted assassination of Ike Ekweremadu on November 17.

Timi Frank, the acting national publicity secretary of the APC described PDP’s allegation of the APC being behind the attempted assassination on Mr. Ekweremadu’s life as “induced hallucination”.

In the statement, Frank stated that it was unfortunate that the PDP had resorted to cheap blackmail. He said the past 16 years of PDP’s rule saw a minister, Bola Ige, politicians like Harry Marshall and Funso Williams assassinated with no attempt to unravel the mysteries that surrounded their deaths.
“It would therefore, be unfortunate for the PDP to elevate this strategic act it had perfected over the years to a political art or a propaganda tool,’’ the statement read.

Pan Igbo group, Ohanaeze disowns Nnamdi Kanu, Biafra

The Pan Igbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Friday disowned the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and his cohorts in their struggle for the state of Biafra.

This was made known by the Chairman, Forum of State Presidents of Ohanaeze in the seven Igbo speaking states, in Awka, Dr. Chris Eluomunoh, that no right thinking person would support what he called the madness of the group .

He said:
“You will notice that Ohanaeze has been very silent on the issue of Biafra insurgency, though the youth wing of Ohanaeze has been speaking on it. Ohanaeze, as the Igbo cultural group, cannot support Biafra and we dissociate ourselves from it totally.
“Igbo people have contributed much to the development of Nigeria and we cannot allow some people to jeopardise the lives and efforts of millions of Igbo residing in all parts of Nigeria.
“We believe that anybody who has any issue to settle with the Federal Government should use dialogue and that is why we participated in the last National Conference. No sane Igbo person would want to witness a repeat of the kind of thing that happened during the Civil War.
“(Chief Odumegwu) Ojukwu, who led the Biafra war, returned to Nigeria from exile and contested elections in Nigeria, which showed that he was fully integrated into Nigeria and was a full-fledged Nigerian before he died.”
Eluemunor said that most of the agitation for a Biafran state came mainly from those living abroad.

He called on Pres. Buhari to declare a state of emergency on the infrastructure problem in the South East by rehabilitating the federal roads that have become death traps due to neglect.
He said doing so would help to correct the imbalances and marginalization being suffered by the Igbos.
He said:
“We know the marginalisation was not caused by him, but we plead that he should look into the problems being complained about by the people of South East and South–South. He has won the election and we in Ohanaeze support him and will work with him for the unity of the country.”
