Edo Governorship Election: Election date should remain sacrosanct - PDP

Edo Governorship Election: Election date should remain sacrosanct - PDP

Read the party’s statement below:
Sequel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s Decision this afternoon to go ahead with the Edo State Gubernatorial Election as scheduled; and their immediate reversal of that patriotic stance, the Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, CON, has re-iterated its earlier position that the Saturday September 10, 2016 Election Date should remain sacrosanct since there is no tangible reason(s) evident to tamper with the Election.

The call for the postponement of the Election by top hierarchy of the security agencies predicated on alleged security threat was a less than ingenious attempt to buy time for the APC which is clearly heading for a major electoral catastrophe on Saturday.
"It is shameful and indeed a major constitutional breach for the security agencies to act in concert with the APC to truncate an Election that had been planned for months. Nigerians were not deceived by the obvious concoctions of the security agencies whose performances during elections have been less than average since the advent of the Buhari Administration. Indeed they have become instruments in the hands of the Ruling Party to harass, intimidate and punish opponents." Prince Adeyeye declared.
The time may be ripe now for President Buhari and the National Assembly to conduct a non-partisan holistic review and investigation of the national security apparatus to save our fledging democracy.
“The postponement of the Election by INEC is illegal, unconstitutional and a breach of the peoples’ trust in the Commission and the security agencies. It is a coup against the people of Edo State in particular and Nigerians in general. Since APC assumed power, virtually all elections conducted by INEC have either been inconclusive or truncated. Saturday’s Election in Edo State must be an exemption. We will not accept anything less than free, fair and transparent election conducted and concluded the same day. INEC must rise to the occasion to restore the confidence of Nigerians in its operations. Edo is a test case. With the way INEC is performing, how are we sure that it would be able to handle the 2019 national elections. Our democracy is under a serious threat from the APC and its Gestapo security agencies.”
Finally, we call on all stakeholders - The Media, civil society organizations, all political parties and indeed all Nigerians and the international community to rise to defend our hard earned democracy from the assault being unleashed on it by the APC Government.
Signed:
Prince Dayo Adeyeye PDP National Publicity Secretary

Former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu begs Nigerians to give President Buhari more time

Former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu begs Nigerians to give President Buhari more time

Former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has appealed to Nigerians to give President Buhari more time to address the economic challenges facing the country. He made the plea when he hosted Catholic Bishops and the diplomatic community at his Abuja home yesterday.

He noted that President Buhari had just spent one year out of his four year term in office and so needs more time to work.

His words:

"I'm calling on Nigerian youths to be of good use to themselves. Let me be honest with you, I cannot judge Buhari. He has a four-year mandate to turn things around. He still has time and I expect that he will do something. Young people might be feeling frustrated. Government must not do everything. The only thing is that government is not paying enough attention to the manufacturing sector. If I am government, I will pay attention to manufacturing and agriculture. You pay attention through the entrepreneurs by giving them single digit loans and opportunities. All the enterprise done by government will not work until they see us as partners. When Dangote was starting his cement factory, he was encouraged by the government. Today, he is all over Nigeria. The problem is people are envious and jealous; they see Orji Kalu who is rich, but they do not know what I have gone through to get to this level. They want to be like me, and that is not possible. Government should grant more incentives to the entrepreneurs. In June 1999, I told President Olusegun Obasanjo how to solve the power sector by doing something differently. We brought people and they promised to fix the power problem up to 75 percent. But Obasanjo refused. The amount needed was N14 billion. If Nigeria can fix power and insecurity, the country will move forward”.

Ekweremadu tells Buhari to stop the Police from intimidating PDP members

Ekweremadu tells Buhari to stop the Police from intimidating PDP members

Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President, has asked President Buhari to stop the Police from intimidating members of the opposition party, PDP, particularly as the people of Edo go to the polls this Saturday to elect a new governor. He made this known in a statement signed by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu.

The Senator accused the police of arbitrarily arresting and intimidating some PDP members and supporters and as such, urged President Buhari to urgently prevail on the issue so as to ensure a free and fair election that was established by the PDP before they lost to APC during the 2015 general election.

His words:

"I am deeply distressed by the development, not just because I am a member of the PDP, but more importantly, because the PDP had taken our electoral process beyond where it is being dragged back to today. The greatest gift of democracy, which makes other blessings of democracy feasible, is the inalienable right of the people to elect their leaders of their own freewill in a free, fair, and credible electoral process that must be devoid of all forms of intimidation. As a beneficiary of the electoral reforms and policy of non-interference in the electoral process, exemplified by the immediate past PDP administration, led by former President Goodluck Jonathan, I expect the APC-led federal government to immediately call the security agencies to order. If the APC-led FG cannot improve on the electoral process, I expect them to, at least, maintain the standard set by the PDP".
