Polytechnic teachers begin strike Wednesday

Polytechnic teachers begin strike Wednesday

protest d Nigerian Policemen fire tear gas at protesting polytechnic ...

Following inconclusive discussions with the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has resolved to proceed on an indefinite strike, with effect from February 25, 2015.

On that day, the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government would have effectively elapsed.

The latest action is sequel to the suspension of the implementation of CONTISS 15 salary structure in all the polytechnics through a circular by the Minister of Education, directing that the special salary scale be discontinued without explanations.

The President of ASUP, Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha, at a press briefing after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held on Saturday in Abuja, directed its members nationwide to proceed on the indefinite strike.

He also berated the Federal Government for lacking the political will to implement demands of ASUP which, according to him, were capable of revamping the technical education sector.

Asomugha said it was unfortunate that government and its officials “only shiver when members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities go on strike because of the direct implication it may have on their children.”

The ASUP president said advanced countries of the world were doing better because they had taken full advantage of the polytechnic system of education.

He said, “You will recall that in 2012, our union placed a 13-point demand portfolio before the government for negotiation and subsequent implementation. Most of these demands were carryover from the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUP.

“Some of these demands include the continued discrimination against polytechnic graduates in the public service and in the labour market in Nigeria; non-release of the White Paper on the visitation to the federal polytechnics; non-implementation of CONTISS 15 migration for the lower cadres and its arrears as from 2009 when the salary structure was approved; and non-establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission and the wrongful continued recognition of the National Board for Technical Education as the regulatory body for polytechnics.

“The failure of the government to attend to these demands led to a series of strike actions we had embarked upon between 2013 and 2014. The polytechnic sector is still undergoing a frenzied recovery from the scars of that engagement. As we have always stated, the sordid experience our sector went through in recent times was avoidable if the government had deployed proactive measures in addressing the issues in disputes.

“In view of these developments and also in view of the failure of the government to honour agreement with our union, we hereby resolved as follows: That at the expiration of the two-week ultimatum, our union has issued to the government beginning from February 11, 2015, on the pending issues, ASUP shall embark on an indefinite strike action until all the ongoing anomalies in our polytechnics are addressed and the 13-point demand pending before the government implemented.”

Speaking on the postponement of the general elections, ASUP said the political gladiators were unnecessarily over-heating the polity by neglecting other core sectors of the economy to suffer unjustly.

The PUNCH recalls that ASUP and the Federal Government had been in conflict since 2009 over issues relating to the implementation of the white paper emanating from the NEEDS assessment visitation panels sent to the polytechnics by the government.

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Saturday that the his administration would not rest until it stabilised power supply in the country. He made the pledge at the inauguration of the rehabilitated Unit 6 and unit 4 of the Egbin thermal plant in Lagos to raise the output of the plant by 220 megawatts “For government, there is no going back until we surely stabilise power in the country,” the president said.

He said the rehabilitation of the plant had returned Egbin to its full capacity of 1,320 megawatts. According to him the landmark achievement was happening for the first time since the inception of the plant. He said the power output would be beneficial to the Lagos industrial layout and its environs while its sustenance would lead to creation of more jobs.

The president added that the power road map of his administration had set out the key foundation needed to remove the obstacles needed in the power sector investment. He said that stemming from the privatisation of the power sector more dividends had accrued to the nation. He noted that the feat achieved by the administration would extend the life span of the Egbin plant by another 20 years.

“The Egbin power plant and the result shown today demonstrate without doubt that we have made a strong foundation upon which we are building a sound and sustainable electricity industry. “Let me restate that we are committed to irreversibly reposition the Nigerian power sector as a pivot for the attainment of our nation’s development targets.”

The president further said that his administration was diversifying the energy source by exploring all the options available to remain the strongest economy in the continent and beyond. He said that from now and in the future the FG would continue to make the power sector growth become self-sustaining and viable by creating a conducive environment through access to low interest finance and sound policy formulation. He commended the Board and Management of Egbin and the regulatory bodies for a job well done.

He further urged the host community to partner the power station to conserve the environment and protect the facility. The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, noted that since privatisation the power sector had received a new boost to move the nation to the next level.

He said that for 16 years before the advent of the Jonathan administration, no engineer was hired or employed by the operators in the industry but Egbin had hired more than 107 engineers in training. He said that the revamped units had been moribund for more than nine years while the new company owner invested over N50 billion to revive the plant.

He said that a lot of work was done in the other power generation companies to boost their capacity. Accordingly, he said, that Kainji dam was raised from 80 mw to additional 150mw with another 330 mw to be injected soon. He said that Shiroro dam’s 450mw plant had added another 150 megawatts.

He said Ugheli had increased to 600mw from less than 200mw before privatisation. He also said a minimum of 5,000 megawatts would be added to the grid when the coal turbines across the country were completed.

The chairman of the board of directors of the plant, Mr Kola Adesina, said the management recognised the importance of the plant to improve power when it commenced the revamping exercise.

He praised the Jonathan administration for the CBN power sector intervention fund which had assisted industry operators. He said over one million homes in Lagos would enjoy additional six hours of power per day, with more than 6,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect employment opened.

Don’t postpone polls again, UN tells FG

Don’t postpone polls again, UN tells FG

Secretary General, United Nation, Mr. Ban Ki-moon

United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has urged the Federal Government to ensure that the new dates set for the general elections are maintained following the recent postponement.

The polls, originally scheduled for February 14, was rescheduled to March 28 and 11 April,2015 following appeals by the armed forces to delay the vote for six weeks within which to combat the Boko Haram terrorist threat.

In a statement on Friday, the Secretary-General welcomed commitments by the presidential candidates to respect the new calendar and commended the progress made by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the preparation for the elections, including the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards.

In addition, Ban urged all relevant national institutions to continue to work with INEC “to ensure all voters can exercise their constitutional right to participate in the elections freely and without intimidation.”

He expressed strong concerns over reports of election-related violence and urged all political leaders to adhere to their commitments under the Abuja Accord, “to refrain from inflammatory statements and to immediately condemn any statements from their supporters that amount to an incitement to violence or subversion of the electoral process.”

Ban reiterated that the UN would continue to closely follow developments in the country and that the Organisation was offering its full support to Nigeria at this important moment, particularly through the ongoing active engagement of his High-Level Representative to Nigeria, Mohamed Ibn Chambas.
