Isabelle Dinoire, 49, the French woman who underwent the world’s first face transplant has died almost eleven years since the groundbreaking operation. She succumbed to two types of cancer earlier this summer after a decade taking powerful immunosuppressant drugs.
The drugs were designed to prevent her body rejecting new tissues, but they always threatened to make Ms Dinoire seriously ill.
Miss
Dinoire, from Valenciennes, northern France, captured the imagination
of the world in November 2005 when she was given a new nose, mouth and
chin at the nearby Amiens Hospital.
She was rushed to hospital after her pet dog apparently ripped off the vital features, but she had no memory of what happened.
After taking sleeping pills, all the divorced mother of two could remember was waking up with blood on the floor of her flat.
When she tried to light up a cigarette, Miss Dinoire had realised her facial features were missing.
It
took a team led by Professor Bernard Duvauchelle, an oral and
maxillofacial surgeon, 15 hours to perform the medical breakthrough.
A triangle of face tissue from a brain-dead woman's nose and mouth were grafted onto Miss Dinoire.
Three years on, Miss Dinoire admitted that she remained uncertain as to whose face she looked at in the mirror every day.
Referring to the dead donor, she said in 2008: ‘It's not hers, it's not mine, it's somebody else's.
‘Before
the operation, I expected my new face would look like me but it turned
out after the operation that it was half me and half her.’
Miss
Dinoire said she had not yet worked out her new identity, adding: ‘It
takes an awful lot of time to get used to someone else's face. It's a
peculiar type of transplant.’
Miss Dinoire soon regained sensation back in the transplanted face, but regularly suffered graft rejection.
A
report in the news outlet’s health pages today reads: ‘Isabelle Dinoire
died this summer. She was the first patient in the world to benefit
from a face transplant in 2005.’
Surgeons have been transplanting
livers, kidneys and hearts for many years, but faces have always been
different, because they are seen as a sacred, untouchable parts of a
person's identity.
Unlike other organs, face transplants are not
life-saving operations. As a result, ethical committees frequently
blocked them from going ahead.
But Professor Dubernard, said after carrying out the
operation: ‘Once I had seen Isabelle's disfigured face, no more needed
to be said. I was convinced something had to be done for this patient.’

Bizarre: See mutant pig with human face and penis on forehead
Disturbing footage has emerged online showing a 'mutant' pig born in China, having a human face and a 'PENIS' on its forehead.
The piglet is seen yawning or gasping for breath as it is held up to the camera and has been widely shared on Chinese social media.
Many viewers are now speculating about the reason behind the animal's deformity - with some blaming environmental pollution.
Friends
and neighbours of Tao Lu rushed to his property in Yanan township in
the city of Nanning, China, after news of the deformed pig spread.
One
of the last to be born in a litter of 19, the little piglet was
described by witnesses as having a human face and a penis on its
forehead.
And when a local newspaper published pictures of the bizarre-looking animal, several people contacted Tao, offering to buy it.
Sadly, the animal died after being rejected by its mother and refusing a bottle.
Tao, 40, said: "It was a large litter, and the mutant was one of the last of 19 piglets to be born.
"All the others were normal, just this one was really bizarre.
"It
is a shame it died, I could have got more money for it than for the
rest of the family put together based on what people were offering me on
the phone."

The farmer said he had intended to put the pig on display to attract visitors.
One
person who saw the animal first hand, Wu Kung, 32, said: "I was one of a
dozen people who went there to see the piglet, and it really did have
human face and exactly like he said, a penis growing out of its
forehead."

Did Donald Trump choke during Mexico trip? Checkout what Hillary and Bill Clinton said about him
Did Donald Trump choke during Mexico trip? Checkout what Hillary and Bill Clinton said about him
Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton have blasted Donald Trump over his visit to Mexico last Wednesday.
Trump had talked about building a wall between Mexico and USA to
curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S but didn't
bring up the topic while he visited Mexico's president Enrique Peña
Nieto and Hillary and Bill Clinton have now slammed Donald Trump for
'creating a diplomatic incident.
'He didn't raise it, so he did choke. He didn't know how to even communicate effectively with a head of state. And I think that's a pretty clear outcome from that trip,' Hillary Clinton told ABC on Monday. He couldn't even bring himself to tell the president of Mexico one of his very few policy demands.'
Bill Clinton, who campaigned for his wife in Detroit, also
blasted Trump - particularly his rally in Arizona immediately after the
Mexico visit, in which he once again promised to make Mexico pay for the
wall resulting in cheers from the crowd.
'I've had that job,' Bill, former US president said, according to ABC. (Trump's visit) damaged America and every serious country in the world. You cannot be the leader of a country, go down and be nice to people and then come home and dump on them for your own political benefit.'
Read Trump's reply...
'It could be, but what’s going to happen is if you’re going to be a citizen, you’re going to leave and you're going to have to come back. And if they don't want to become citizens, he said, 'they have to make a determination what happens when the border is secure. So you’re open to them staying here undocumented?' Trump was asked. I’m going to make a decision, or somebody will,' he replied, 'Whether it’s me or somebody else because by that time we’ll have a secure border, we’ll have a wall.'
Senator Tim Kaine, who was also taking part in the ABC interview with Hillary Clinton, also criticized the Republican candidate.
He said: 'If you're gonna cave when you're with an ally, and Mexico's an
ally, what are you gonna do when you're with an adversary?'
'You shouldn't leave the safety of America and our diplomacy in the
hands of a rookie who, on his one visit with a foreign leader, has
already created kind of an international embarrassment for us,' he
continued.

Lionel Messi Explains Why He Dyed His Hair Blonde
Lionel Messi has finally revealed why he dramatically switched his look and bleached his hair this summer.
Argentina and Barcelona star was first spotted with his new hair do in July, turning heads with a platinum blonde look after his partner Antonella Roccuzzo posted an Instagram picture of the transformed star.
And after returning to his home country and appearing on Argentine television, Messi addressed the question of why he’d decided to ditch his usual brown locks.
“I made a change to start from zero,” he said.
“I was emerging from a lot of controversies, of things that had happened to me and I said to myself: ‘You’ve got to break this and start again.’”

WHO confirms Nigeria’s 3rd Polio case
WHO confirms Nigeria’s 3rd Polio case
The
World Health Organization has confirmed a third case of polio in
Nigeria, Rotary Club said Monday: a crippled toddler found in an area
newly liberated from Boko Haram Islamic extremists.
The
West African nation that once was the global epicenter of the wild polio
virus had been declared polio-free last year, along with the African
continent. But two cases were discovered last month among refugees from
areas recently won back by Nigeria's military from Boko Haram.
More
cases are expected to be discovered in these areas. It is an indicator
that Nigeria's war on polio cannot be won until it overcomes the
insurgency by extremists who are violently opposed to Western medicine.
Rotary
Club's field coordinator, Aminu Muhammad, told The Associated Press the
new case was found in Monguno local government area. The others were
farther south in Jere and Gwoza. All are in northern Borno state.
Rotary
is participating in a new emergency immunization drive that vaccinated
more than 1.5 million children last week in Borno, where WHO has said
the virus has been circulating undetected for five years and where Boko
Haram began its Islamic uprising in 2009.
The campaign is to spread across the country, with a plan to reach 25 million children before the end of the year.
But the U.N. Children's Fund has warned that about 1 million children are in areas too dangerous to access.
Nigeria's
military has helped with the vaccination drive, which included
logistics and other aid from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the
United Nations and Britain's Save the Children as well as government
health workers. Military helicopters flew vaccines into places too
dangerous to reach by road, and truckloads of troops and armored cars
escorted vaccinators elsewhere.
Muhammad said they were using "hit and run" tactics to reach kids in areas where Boko Haram is present.
Nigeria's
military has said it has the insurgents "on the run" and needs only to
clear them out of areas bordering Cameroon, Chad and Niger as well as
their northeastern stronghold in the Sambisa Forest. But a map used in
the vaccination campaign shows almost all of Borno state is only
“partially accessible,” with four northern areas "inaccessible" and only
the extreme south "accessible."
