Checkout What President Buhari Told Nigerian Lawyers Today

Checkout What President Buhari Told Nigerian Lawyers Today

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerian lawyers not to sacrifice the integrity of the country’s legal system in a bid to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be.

Speaking at the opening of the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Sunday in Abuja, President Buhari called on Nigerian lawyers to support his administration’s war against corruption and help the country return to the path of rectitude by making Nigerian courts functional and effective again.
“I am convinced that law, law-makers, lawyers, law courts and the law enforcement agencies all have pivotal responsibilities to discharge, if the change we seek is ever to materialize.
“As you all know by now, this administration has taken on the challenge of improving security, fighting corruption and revamping the economy, among many others.
“The fight against corruption is in reality a struggle for the restoration of law and order. Corruption and impunity become widespread when disrespect for law is allowed to thrive in society. Disrespect for law also thrives when people get away with all sorts of shady deals and the court system is somehow unable to check them.
“Ability to manipulate and frustrate the legal system is the crowning glory of the corrupt and, as may be expected, this has left many legal practitioners and law courts tainted in an ugly way.
“In a gathering such as this, I do not need to elaborate on the way that corruption and impunity have damaged our economy. But I would like to say more on what, I believe, should be your role as legal practitioners, in helping us back to the path of rectitude.
“First, we need to make our courts functional and effective again. This means that we must have lawyers who take the ethics of the profession very seriously; lawyers who will not frustrate the course of justice, even though they defend their clients with all legitimate means and resources.
“Nigeria needs ethical lawyers who always keep the end of justice in mind and will never sacrifice the integrity of the legal system to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be,” President Buhari told the country’s lawyers.
Noting that lawyers are often in the vanguard of the defense of human rights, President Buhari urged them to view corruption too as a gross violation of human rights.
“For the masses of our people, the millions still wallowing in want and diseases, corruption is a major reason why they cannot go to school; why they cannot be gainfully employed; and why there are few doctors, nurses and drugs in their hospitals and health centers. It is the reason why pensioners are not paid and potable water is scarce.
“In effect, corruption diverts public resources meant for millions of people into the private pockets of a greedy few, thereby causing a lot of suffering, deprivation and death. In my view, there can be no greater violation of human rights.
“Viewed in this way, I think we can all fully appreciate the gravity of this oppressive and destructive evil. This should rouse us to fight it with the same zeal and doggedness as we deploy in the defense of fundamental rights,” President Buhari said.

Nollywood Actress Mide Funmi Martins: My Husband Afeez Owo Abiodun Is “Ugly” But I Love Him Like That.In a recent chat with a Lagos-based softsell magazine, Nollywood actress Mide Martins revealed why she married her husband, filmmaker Afeez Owo.

While responding to her viral marriage crash report, the mother of two said:

I know that people are saying that because they can’t reconcile how a fine girl like me will be married to someone who is not as fine as I am. Yes, I thought of that and that is the reason why people keep wishing us bad. And they have been saying it right from the onset, that haaa! Their marriage can’t last. They don’t match. They are not perfect match. They don’t fit. “haa omo yen ti fine ju loo, some say Ogun lo lo fun and I said its impossible. How can someone use juju on you for over 13 years. I have 2 kids with him.

Buhari Still Behaving Like A Military Dictator – Afenifere

Afenifere

The Pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint ministers that will assist him in the day-to-day administration of the country instead of running a one-man show.

The leader of the group, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, who disclosed this in an interview with reporters at the weekend, said the general perception is that the president is slow into taking action and decisions because of a lack of policy direction from the government.

The Afenifere leader, therefore, called on Buhari to settle down and come up with a comprehensive package that will take Nigeria to the Promised Land.
“I think the President should sit down and have a package. What people are saying is very correct. He just is picking people here and there. He did not get time to settle down for governance yet and the time is flying. Let him constitute the Cabinet and start working”, he said.

“As it is now, Buhari is still behaving like a military dictator; just picking on people. He should sit down for work. His cabinet has not met, he is running a one man show now but let us give him some time”, Pa Fasoranti added.

"How my husband's family members crashed my marriage" - Actress Ini Edo

Actress Ini Edo was the guest on today's edition of the Rubbin minds show hosted by media personality, Ebuka Uchendu and during the show, she addressed her failed marriage and more.

I was able to transcribe a few things she said...see highlights from what she said below:

"I got married early because I wanted a family. I think my Marriage was an experience which I don't regret. He was the last child, so his family members kinda interfered in the marriage, which is naturally normal. He was okay with the kind of work I did and he kinda interfered as a good husband. We couldn't find common grounds and agree on certain things so we fell out.  My husband and I were far apart from each other, maybe being together would have helped. My marriage fell out because of Differences. For now i just wanna fix my life, no marriage in the picture."

On having friends in Nollywood "I have just a few friends in the industry, Jim Iyke, Alex Ekubo, Ebube Nwagbo, Rukky Sanda, Ebuka and the clique. I am friends with Genevieve Nnaji and we have a good relationship. We don't talk everyday."

Speaking further, she said "I have a new movie titled "While You Slept" and it's very interesting featuring Joseph Benjamin and Benita Akpofure. .I love Music. I wish I could sing, but I would rather not.I like to do what I'm good at. I don't believe in hopping from one place to another."

On dating Mike Godson 'Mike is a Friend, and we work together often. That's just all. Just friends. one article came out and everyone just feasted on that article, nothing more. I love my job and I don't have a problem dating an Actor. I can even date a banker."

Oh by the way she says she doesn't know what Ghollywood is... lol, John Dumelo, Yvonne Nelson and co will not like that.

It hurts to see able bodied young graduates ready and willing to work even at less pay but still no job for them to engage themselves and startup a decent life.

It hurts to see Nigerian graduates sit idly at home after spending between 4 – 5 years in the higher institution, with an additional one year compulsory service to the nation, and at the end of it all, there is no job for these youths to earn a living after spending so much on school fees, handouts, textbooks, extra moral classes, etc.

The dream of every youth is to secure a decent job after graduation, but this dream usually becomes a mirage after passing out from NYSC programme, as many graduates undergo series of job tests and interviews to no avail, it hurts.

In the process, some give up their high dream of securing a job and venture into entrepreneurship with little or no adequate startup capital, which usually end up in a bad way after a year or two.
I am not here to whine about the government’s inability to provide enabling environment that will drive in more foreign investors and encourage local firms, which will in turn create jobs for the youths, but I am here to give some solutions that will help any reader of this article secure a job faster.

Please do note that I am not a Human Resources expert, neither am I working with any company’s HR department to avoid people sending me Private Messages for job assistance, I can only help inform you of latest job opportunities based on information I get from my friends who are HR experts and professionals, plus the ones I got reliably online.

Haven made that clear, let’s move on.
If you are a Nigerian graduate and you want to secure job fast, try the tips below:
1. Start your job hunting early:
Don’t wait to start sending out your CV and application (solicited and unsolicited) after your passing out parade, start early; at least a month to your passing out from NYSC.

2. Don’t rely on one job advert website:
Do you know that no one website publishes all the job opportunities available in the country?
Administrators of these job advert websites are also humans, so don’t rely on one website because they do always omit some jobs either because they were unaware or didn’t get the information on time.
Again, some websites maybe expert in publishing latest jobs for engineering graduates, while another maybe a specialists in hospitality jobs.

So to put yourself at a good chance, have at least 5 reliable job advert website bookmarked on your phone and laptop browser which you must visit once in a day.
Its not too much task to do because I am sure most job seekers in Nigeria today don’t miss any Linda Ikeji blog post which hardly add value to their life, but instead increases their anger and frustration with life as they read about different celebrities flexing life while they beg to get a 50k per month job to start life.

3. Follow job and career related Twitter handles:
Don’t just follow entertainment celebrities on Twitter, try and follow career and Human Resources experts on Twitter, also follow official company twitter handles.
I once got a firsthand job vacancy info via a company Twitter handle last year, and one of my fans secured that job and wrote me to say thank you.

4. Make sure your CV speaks well:
Many recruitment experts have discussed this very topic, so I am not going to over flog issues, just try and give your CV to someone with recruitment experience to review for you.

5. Have a good Linkedin profile:
Even though most Nigerian employers hardly hire through linkedin, don’t ignore the possibilities of securing a job through linkedin.
At least, one of my fans did got a job with Jagal Group last year via linkedin.

6. Tell people about your employment status:
Fortunately or unfortunately, some youth graduates in their effort not to appear jobless and broke, do lie about their employment status.
Some go as far as bragging about having a very lucrative job whereas they maybe jobless or underemployed.

Don’t tell people you work with Chevron when actually you work with Ayodele Chicken Farms Otta, the implication is that they will assume you have a good job and won’t inform you when there’s a job opening that may suit your qualification.

Be honest in life, if you are unemployed, tell your friends and family members and always remind them that you’re still job-hunting.

Being unemployed is not a crime, everyone in life must have been unemployed at some point.
Buhari once cried for loosing the presidential election and probably thought he will never be the president again, but today he is the CinC.

7. Don’t rely on anybody:
While you tell family and friends about your unemployment status, please don’t put all your hope of securing a job on one uncle working with Shell, Mobil, NNPC, etc, believe in yourself that’s why you are a graduate.

Do you know how many help-me-secure-a-job mails I receive on daily basis (please I am not mocking those people sending me such mails, God knows I do wish I could help them all)? It always weigh me down because I usually wish I could give all of them good jobs, but then I can’t, neither can Aliko Dangote nor President Buhari.

Why it is not advisable to rely on someone for job is because that person may have more than 10 persons relying on him for job, so who will he give, who will he ignore?
Just pray to God to send your helpers, that’s all you should do.

Always brush your brain up with GMAT, and other job aptitude test handbooks and online materials.
Don’t stop reading, not until you have secured your dream job at least.

8. Make friends of like-minds:
If you want to succeed in life, chose the right friends because friends shape our future more than siblings.
If your goal is to secure a job, stop mingling with motor park boys or students.

9. Your looks matters:
If you are a very pretty lady searching for a job, please you must be careful with how you dress to avoid distracting the HR personnel’s attention, which may hurt your chances of securing the job.
Don’t dress in a way the HR personnel will form a misconceived belief that all you can offer is your physical beauty.

If you are very tall as a lady going for an interview, don’t wear a highheel shoe, find a moderate heel.
Don’t fake your accent during interview, don’t use all those eye lashes and heavy makeup.
Dress moderate.

10. Send unsolicited applications:
Don’t only wait for companies to advertise, always research about companies in your field of study and send well constructed unsolicited application with your well-edited CV attached to it.
I personally have gotten 3 job offers in the past through unsolicited applications, so you too can try it.

11. Don’t wait for big pay jobs only:
Many young graduates out of their greed have turned down jobs of small pay while waiting and praying for big pay jobs in big corporations while their mates are taking up smaller pay jobs to secure work experience and move up faster than they ever thought.

In case you don’t know, not many companies nowadays wants to hire young graduates without relevant work experience because all organisation are looking for ways to cut cost and maximise profit, and training and re-training young graduates to fit into the job role isn’t always an easy or cost-effective venture for companies.

So when next you get a job offer of 40k per month, don’t reject it if it will allow you get experience in your field….believe me, from that job, you will get a bigger offer with time.
I have many friends, relatives and fans who have moved up from their 30k per month jobs to 100k, 150k, 200k, 300k, 500k, etc jobs in less than 4 years.

I will drop you guys here for today, see you again some other time.
I wish you all God’s divine favour in your search for job and better life.

"I can’t stand short men" -- Actress Bimbo Thomas

"I can’t stand short men" -- Actress Bimbo Thomas

Bimbo Thomas

Nollywood actress, Bimbo Thomas has been in the movie industry for quite a while, but she shot into the limelight when she appeared in Funke Akindele’s popular movie, ‘Omo Ghetto.’ In this chat with Potpourri, she speaks on the early days of her career, her wine store, among other issues. Excerpts…
Can you trace your genesis in the movie industry?

I can remember it was during my undergraduate days at the University of Lagos studying Creative Arts. When I was in 100 Level, I met Tayo Odueke (Sikirat Sindodo), and she was already in the industry at that time. She noticed that I was doing well when it comes to projects and practicals in school.

She then suggested that I should come into the movie industry since I have all it takes in terms of charisma and every other thing. It took me a while to decide though. Later on, I met with Lanre Abbey and he introduced me to the Odunfa Caucus under the tutelage of Yinka Quadri.

Which of the movies you’ve acted in will you say gave your big break?

I’ll say ‘Omo Ghetto.’

Which is the most challenging role you’ve played in a movie?

Playing Nikky in Omo Ghetto was challenging. I had never broken a bottle before in my life, and I had also never been involved in a street fight, but I had to do all that in the movie. I put in my all and the character stuck. It took me some time to get that character out of my head.

Are you comfortable with your size, or would you like to change anything about it?

I’m okay. Right now, I’m even on a diet program trying to shed some weight. I know that I don’t want to go beyond this size because there are some sizes that are not good enough for a babe. And for a woman that has not started making babies, I should watch it if I don’t want to go way overboard.

It was reported that your wine store cost N42m, is it true, and what informed your setting up of the store?

This store, Bimbally, isn’t what I thought will come into place now. But the love for collecting wines, beauty and nature have always been in me.   One day, I just thought of it that I haven’t really been working for a while now because I’m selective of the scripts I accept because I noticed that I was being stereotyped. I knew I needed a brand extension, and I thought of establishing a clothing line which I’m still going to do anyway, and a wine store. And the rest as they say, is history. The plan is to expand and have branches all over as time goes on.

It was alleged that your sugar daddy gave you the money to set up the store, what do you have to say about that?

It’s very funny when I hear things like that; I wonder where they think it up from. Looking at this shop, does it look to you like it’s worth N42m?

No, but my eyes could be deceiving me, is it?

I put this down with my own hard-earned money; no man gave me money. Even my family members were shocked when I opened the store because I didn’t inform anybody. My man was also surprised. Anyway, I think it’s a hype for me and I love it, except for the aspect of the man that they added to it.

What’s the craziest thing you can do on a movie set?

Now you’ve got me thinking. I’ve kissed severally. I really don’t know, but I can’t go nude.

Which is the most memorable kiss you’ve ever had on set?

It was with Femi Branch. I’ve forgotten the title of the film now but we played lovers and we had to make it real, and we really kissed. He had his back turned at me, and he said something. Instead of me to respond, I just grabbed him and started kissing him; even the director was stunned. He is my friend though and I know his wife.

Which actor would you like to kiss?

Internationally, it’s Idris Elba, but lately I’ve had a crush on Terrence Howard. Locally, it’s John Dumelo (Blushes).

What’s your favourite part of your body?

My lips.

Have you ever been friends with benefit with anybody?

No, I don’t subscribe to it. I’ve always had a smooth arrangement with everybody I’ve come in contact with. However, like the Kumi guy I told you about, we started out as friends, and you know we ladies always know when guys like us. But I, as a person, don’t like to drag it out of you. I’ll act as if I can’t read between the lines. Anyway, we gradually began a relationship, but I won’t even peck an ordinary friend; it’s that bad.

There’s a lot of lesbianism talks in the industry nowadays, have you ever had a lesbian hit on you?

Not from anyone in the industry, but outside. There was a time I was at a party and they played one of my favourite songs and I started dancing excitedly. I noticed a lady was looking at me in a funny kind of way. When I sat down, we got talking. And she began putting her hands on me, telling me that she had been admiring me for a long time. There and then, I shut her down and she apologised. The irony is that she’s even a prettier lady than I am.

It is believed that many actresses these days are glorified prostitutes, what’s your take on that?

When people say things like that, I feel it’s their opinion, which they have a right to. I have a lot of guys as friends and I know that they like actresses, maybe because they can boast with it that they’re dating famous people. There are many girls out there who can do whatever they like without public scrutiny, but it’s not so for actresses. But why would someone who is famous be prostituting when the attention of the whole world is on her? It doesn’t make sense. Being famous deprives one of doing certain things.

If anyone calls me with a strange number and starts saying funny things like I like you, or I have so and so uncle I want you to meet, I just block the person’s line straight away. I’m not cut out for things like that. It takes a lot of effort for any member of the opposite sex to be my friend. For whoever is hiding under this umbrella to tarnish other people’s image, I think they should be checked.

Chai! Pet Dog Ate 4 Months Old Baby To Death While Mum Went Shopping In Asaba

Chai! Pet Dog Ate 4 Months Old Baby To Death While Mum Went Shopping In Asaba

Tragedy struck on Friday in Asaba, Delta State, when a 37-year-old house wife, Maureen Akowe, a graduate of sociology from the state-owned university allegedly lost her four-month-old baby to her dog.

It was gathered that the four- month-old baby was driven in the mother’s car alongside the dog to a popular supermarket along Okpanam Road, Asaba, where the house wife had gone for shopping for the baby’s upkeep.

Report says the unsuspecting nursing mother left the baby, a nanny and the dog inside the car and
wound down the windows to allow ventilation into the car before moving into the supermarket.

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered from witnesses that while she was busy shopping, the dog allegedly made straight for the little baby to eat her up while the nanny screamed for help but all to no avail.

The shouts by the nanny attracted two security personnel at the supermarket to the car but by which time the baby, identified as Chinonso, had been bitten severally on the stomach by the dog, leaving the baby in a pool of blood.

The dog had gone wild and was barking menacingly to scare onlookers by the time the baby’s mother got wind of the development and rushed to the scene.

The baby was taken to a nearby hospital along Nnebisi Road, but it was too late by the time they got to the hospital as the baby, the woman’s first child, had already died. The efforts of the helpers who had wanted to rescue the little baby failed as the baby gave up the ghost before getting to the hospital.

Speaking with the nanny who claimed to have hailed from one of the states in the eastern part of the country and did not want her name in the print said:
“Madam carry the dog and baby and asked us to stay inside the car, because the dog was to be treated at the veterinary, suddenly I saw the dog moving closer to the baby and I shouted for help when the dog opened its teeth and I ran out of the car to call madam but she did not come on time”.
Family sources said that the house wife had been married for 3 years without a baby before she took in for the baby that was delivered and named Chinonso.

In a swift reaction, the husband of the woman amidst tears, and did not want his name on the print said:
“my wife said it is the devil’s work and the devil’s work will take her out of my house, I have warned her about the dog when I notice that the dog had been behaving funny. She still kept carrying the dog claiming that she was going to give treatment to the dog. This is how the devil had ruined her”.

Why I’m Fighting To Stop Wike’s Probe Of My Administration — Ex Gov Amaechi

Why I’m Fighting To Stop Wike’s Probe Of My Administration — Ex Gov Amaechi

The immediate past governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, has again explained why he is opposed to and wants to stop the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by his successor, Nyesom Wike to probe some selected government transactions, while he was governor.

In a statement released by the former governor’s media office Sunday, Mr. Amaechi said he’s not afraid of a fair and decent probe or investigation or inquiry of his administration; and would cooperate and support such probe or investigation or inquiry in as much as it’s done within the ambit of our laws.
The statement continues:

“However what Wike has set out to do is anything but a fair probe. The commission will not be fair to Amaechi because it was set up to indict him. Wike had repeatedly held that Amaechi, the person to be investigated, acted illegally in the disbursement of public funds and that Amaechi ran a corrupt government. Clearly, Wike has prejudged the matter and showed his bias that Amaechi is guilty even before investigations. This means Wike, with his prejudiced, made up mind has taken a position of a guilty verdict even before the outcome is known or established.
“The same Wike who had adjudged the yet-to-be-investigated conduct of Amaechi as illegal and Amaechi as corrupt, is the same person that has gone ahead to set up a commission of inquiry and will have the final say on the findings of the commission. What a sham!”
“This bias and predetermined agenda to indict Amaechi is obvious even in the terms of reference of the commission. In one of the defective terms of reference, Wike said the Commission should investigate the circumstances that led to the ‘sale of the state Hotel Olympia’.
“With a fair and decent probe, the Inquiry should have been ‘to examine (or investigate) the transaction concerning Hotel Olympia’. The difference is so clear: In the former, jaundiced Wike’s Term of Reference, it has been prejudiced and concluded that the Hotel was sold, while in the latter, the Inquiry is open and fair, and may lead to a finding of a sale or a lease or even a gift or even a pledge.
“Now, having so concluded that Hotel Olympia was sold, would Wike be decent and humble enough to reverse himself if documents showed it was never sold but concessioned or leased?
“This is one of the dangers of Wike’s commission that harbours a predetermined outcome in the name of an Inquiry and Amaechi will not subject himself to Wike’s deceit and phony shenanigans. Hotel Olympia was never sold. The hotel was only concessioned (or leased) on the approval of the State Executive Council and not sold.”
“Even while inaugurating his yeoman commission of Inquiry, Wike could not conceal his vendetta agenda. He was clear to the panel members that their job is to indict Amaechi. And to do this his dirty hack job, he got Justice G. O. Omereji (the commission chairman), a man who is well known to harbour a long-held, extreme anger, hatred and animosity against former Governor Amaechi. And Justice Omereji has never disguised this his stance and disposition towards Amaechi.

“As a matter of fact, Justice Omereji even advised a former Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) chairman in Rivers State on measures (to take) against then Governor Amaechi. He had expressed his hatred for Amaechi several times to the NBA chairman who was also an Attorney-General of Rivers State. How can we now expect Justice Omereji to be fair to Amaechi, the person he passionately loathes with extreme malice and venom?”
“Anyone who has been following events in Rivers State knows this Wike probe is just a fraudulent sham, a deceptive mission to indict Amaechi. Wike’s one-point agenda is to go after his predecessor. Immediately Wike took over, he made a show and gave a performance of his false accusations that Amaechi stripped the Governor’s Lodge bare, saying that the former governor stole spoons, plates, knives, cups, mattresses, forks and even curtains from the Governor’s Lodge!
“However, in the images Wike showed to back his lies, the curtains in the lodge were clearly there, seen and intact. Again, Wike claimed he met a completely empty treasury. That again is another big lie and grand deception.
“This Wike’s probe is dead on arrival. It’s ill-conceived and ill-motivated. Wike’s probe is designed to twist and distort, or even completely alter selected legitimate government transactions in his desperation to cook up, and fabricate sham cases of corruption against Amaechi.
“Finally, Amaechi will continue to use every constitutional and legal means available to protect his name and image from this massive smear campaign, State-sponsored onslaught against him by Wike led government whose sole agenda is a desperate search for a Rotimi Amaechi political downfall.”

Ex President Jonathan Spent N140Billion As Consultancy Fee For 2nd Niger Bridge - Gov Oshiomole

Ex President Jonathan Spent N140Billion As Consultancy Fee For 2nd Niger Bridge - Gov Oshiomole

Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole has alleged that a whooping N140bn was paid as consultancy fee for the construction of a second Niger bridge by the last administration.
Oshiomhole said this while reacting to insinuations that the Buhari led government was victimizing the Igbos because they did not vote for him. He said if at all there was any victimization, it was in the last administration.
"For those who are interested in politics of sharing, I am not interested; I am interested in the politics of baking. If the competent hands come from one family and they will deliver to the nation so be it. If a Kenyan can be elected as an American President why should we continue to discuss South South or South East.
The second Niger Bridge is what Ndigbo needs to ask Jonathan, where is that bridge? They did ground breaking, water breaking, where is the bridge? When Father Mbaka talked about the shame of Onitsha-Enugu road, people misconstrued his comments. Let me tell you, if the Igbos were marginalized, it was by President Jonathan under the PDP.
Even the consultancy they did in the name of the second Niger Bridge, the expenditure they incurred which is not on ground, about 700 million dollars of that was funded from the Sovereign Wealth Fund which is money not belonging to the Federal Government but to the 774 Local Government Areas, the 36 states and of course the Federal Government.
We called them to appear before us and they said they spent 700 million dollars from the Sovereign Wealth fund and I asked them where is the bridge? That 700million dollars amounted to N140billion on the second Niger Bridge and that money belongs to the three tiers of government.
Okonjo Iweala was shouting on the need to have a Sovereign Wealth Fund but you can see what they used the money for. Those are the issues the Igbos should ask Jonathan to account for. Where is our bridge? Where is the dual carriage way from Onitsha to Owerri and Enugu. The roads in the South South as Obasanjo will say are embarrassment to the people of the South South.
You cannot drive to Yenagoa, no road; so much noise about East West road, where is the road? You go to Akwa Ibom the Federal roads there are in bad shape.
I have listened to governors from the South East, they will tell you there are no roads in the South East. So if the Igbos were marginalized, it was President Jonathan and the PDP. If Nigerians know what these people did, they will stone them to death – jungle justice.

Masquerades arrested for robbing trader of N57,000 in Enugu

The Police in Nsukka arrested two men in masquerade costume in Ovoko Community, Nsukka LGA, Enugu State, for allegedly beating up a passenger on a commercial motorcycle and robbing him of N57,000. The incident happened on the Nsukka/Oballo-Afor highway.

A police source said policemen moved to the scene when the victim, Mr. Chinonso Ezewaji, reported the matter to Nsukka Police Area command and the two men were arrested...

"The escorts of the masquerade however ran away. There were eight masquerades. They blocked the Nsukka/Obollo-Afor road and harassed people. The two arrested masquerades however denied collecting the N57,000 from Ezewaji but claimed they know the person who collected the money from the victim. When we searched one of the arrested masquerade, we saw Indian hemp in his pocket,” the police source said.

When contacted, Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amarizu, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced on the matter. He urged communities to regulate and monitor those who wear masquerade costumes, adding that some of them used the opportunity to harass, intimidate and rob innocent members of the public.

“The Police are not against the people practising their tradition and culture but community leaders must know the character of people they allow to wear costumes of masquerade in the name of culture. A masquerade has no right to mount road block on busy highways where motorists, motorcyclists and other road users move on daily basis. The police have commenced investigation and will get to the root of this matter as issues of masquerade disturbing people have become a recurring decimal,” Amarizu said.

The victim, Ezewaji, a trader, who deals on clothing materials, told the News Agency of Nigeria he was on his way from Nsukka to Obollo-Afor to see his mother when the masquerade stopped the motorcycle he was riding on.
“They beat me, searched me and collected N57,000. When they left, I ran into the bush and when I discovered they have gone some distance, I came out and went to the police to report"he said

The two masquerades identified themselves as Kenchukwu Eze, a carpenter, and Ejiofor Eze, a brick-layer. They, however, denied the allegation that they stole money from Ezewaji They claimed that their colleague, Chima Mamah, stole the money. Eze, however, admitted that the police saw Indian hemp in his pocket, saying it was the leftover of what they smoked before coming out.

“If the police release me, I will not wear masquerade costume, nor smoke Indian hemp again,” he pleaded.

Zakari Explains Why She Is Not Desperate To Become INEC Boss

Zakari Explains Why She Is Not Desperate To Become INEC Boss

The acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mrs. Amina Zakari has refuted speculations in some quarters that she is desperate to be named the substantive chairman of INEC.

Mrs. Zakari, whose tenure as national commissioner expired on July 22, sparking controversy over her continued stay as head of the electoral body, told The Nation that even if her appointment is not eventually confirmed, she has made history as the first woman to be appointed acting chairman of INEC.

Cutting in on a question that was asked: “Your adversaries believe that you want to get the job at all cost”, she said:
“No, no, no. I am not desperate and I don’t have to get the job at all cost. I think even if I don’t get the job, I have made history as the first acting female chairman of INEC. Within this period, have I done anything good? Have I done anything to improve the process? Even if it is a two-day job, somebody has to do it and I happen to be the one doing it. If somebody is asked to come and take over, I will willingly hand over to that person. I am not desperate”.
The INEC boss went on to state that she “has been a widow in the last 15 years, no man or anyone will say I have ever knocked on his door to seek help to take care of my children. I was brought up with decency and I have tried my best to preserve and protect my integrity”.
Responding to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s criticism of her appointment and whether the opposition party’s call for her removal is justified, Zakari was categorical that in politics, everything is justified.
Her words,
“I don’t have a quarrel with them. I have worked very well with them being in charge of political parties. And at that time, there was no single complaint about me. Normally, you see somebody’s name being mentioned in petitions, but in all the four years, there was no time any political party or faction mentioned me in person as doing something to influence any of their activities.

“You would see tons of complaints and petitions from political parties. They would put our directors and everybody in the papers. Did you ever see my name crop up? That was the most sensitive and difficult assignment in INEC and I did it for four years. So for PDP to be saying they don’t like my appointment, that is politics,” she stated.
