Ey! Fayose Blasts President Buhari Again, Says He Can't Be Intimidated

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to tread cautiously and be mindful of the body language of those hailing him today, saying; “the president should be cautious enough to know that the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee tactically told him to tread cautiously and be mindful of the fact that he is not heading a military government.”

The governor, who said he was not unaware of the sinister plot to destabilize his government because of his strong and truthful stands on national issues, vowed not to be cowed by threat from any quarter.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said: “opposition is one of the roots on which democracy stands and any President or Governor that does not want opposition will eventually become a dictator.
“I want to state without fear or favor that I will continue to speak the truth no matter whose ox is gored.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us and no one can intimidate me or the good people of Ekiti State who freely and overwhelmingly gave me their mandate.
“Democracy as a form of government thrives on our ability to ask questions and get answers from leaders,” he said.
He urged the President to listen to wise counsel from the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee saying, “the Peace Committee has reminded the president that he is not heading a military government and with the calibre of Nigerians in the Committee, their wise counsel should not be ignored.

“These are Nigerians who don’t need personal favors from the President and he should get the message very clearly that he is being told not to act as a dictator.”

Governor Fayose said the President should also know that Nigerians are not interested in any honeymoon, but their well-being. His words;
“rather than concentrate and make a difference within his 100 days in office, the president’s greatest achievement so far is harassment of PDP leaders, appointment of his in-law and kinsmen into sensitive positions, selective fight against corruption and arrest and detention of INEC officials who worked in States won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”
While declaring support for the fight against corruption, Governor Fayose however said “fighting corruption should not be synonymous with convicting Nigerians on pages of newspapers. Rather, the judiciary and other relevant agencies should be allowed to do their jobs without any direct or indirect interference from the President and his party.
“Corruption must be fought in accordance with the laws of the land because going against the laws of the land and the oath taken by the President to respect the constitution in itself is corruption.

US Govt Sending Arms To Nigeria Soon – Report

US Govt Sending Arms To Nigeria Soon – Report

According to Punch, Indications  have emerged that the United States’ government is sending arms to the Nigerian military in its efforts to crush Boko Haram.

Facts that the US is sending arms to Nigeria came on the heels of the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle’s revelation in an interview with one of our correspondents that the US government never placed arms embargo on Nigeria.

“There’s been a lot of misunderstanding on this issue before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Washington. Let me be clear about a couple of things. One, we had worked very closely with Nigeria on the Leahy Amendment….The second piece of misinformation, which has been bandied about in (newspapers’) headlines, is that the US has lifted its arms embargo on Nigeria. There was never an arms embargo,” Entwistle said.

According to Radio France Internationale, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency records show that the country’s Department of Defence is set to transfer military material to Nigeria.

The RFI noted that a DSCA list of “so-called Excess Defence Articles” slated for Nigeria indicated that the US Army was about to transfer Caiman trucks, armoured vehicles designed “to defeat current and emerging threats,” according to their manufacturer, British-based BAE Systems.

The RFI added that the US government was also sending armoured vehicles known as MaxxPro MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected), made by Navistar Defence, an Illinois company, and Israeli-based Plasan Sasa.

It is unclear which Nigerian military units will receive the equipment, but the report said that the US government had confirmed that deliveries were pending.

When The PUNCH contacted the state department to confirm the types of military hardware the US would be sending and when deliveries of the weapons would be made, the newspaper was directed to contact Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence.

The spokesperson for the US State Department, Noel Clay, via an email to The PUNCH, said, “The United States is set to expand its efforts to provide bilateral security assistance to Nigeria to counter Boko Haram. We will refer you to the Nigerian MoD to confirm the arrival of any US-origin material, but we can say that a key component of our security assistance to Nigeria in recent years has been training on the importance of respect for human rights and professional military conduct.

“Impunity for human rights violations by security forces not only tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation, but cannot prohibit us from engaging with involved units. We will continue to work with the Nigerian military to ensure they conduct disciplined military operations in accordance with clear rules of engagement and international law; treat all detainees humanely; allow access for independent monitors to all detention facilities; and hold accountable the perpetrators of unlawful violence.”

A 23-year-old girl, identified only as Ugochukwu, was found hanging in his apartment in Festac. It was gathered that on Sunday at about 12pm, Ugochukwu’s mother, identified only as Ngozi, and his two siblings came back from church to find him hanging in the sitting room, dead.

The family members were said to have raised the alarm which brought neighbours to the scene, as everyone was taken aback at the sight of Ugochukwu’s dangling body.
The 23-year-old reportedly used a rope to hang himself from a ceiling fan.
The matter was said to have been reported at the FESTAC Police Division, and the officers reportedly came to remove the corpse.
A police source said that Ugochukwu’s relations said the deceased did not give any clue as to why he committed suicide.
He said:
“Nobody can say why he committed suicide. But two Sundays ago, they caught him mixing cement to drink. The family members had actually gone to church, and he had stayed behind. It was a nieghbour who caught him and alerted the family members.

“But all efforts made to find out from him, what went wrong reportedly proved abortive, as he refused to tell anyone anything, including his mother.

“This morning, the family members went to church again, and Ugochukwu decided to stay back. Nobody suspected anything. It was when the family members came back that they found his corpse.”

Another resident in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the corpse had been taken to the mortuary by the police.
She said:
“Ugochukwu’s father’s whereabouts are unknown, but the boy has a younger brother and an elder sister.

“The corpse has been taken to the mortuary. Since he finished secondary school, he had not been able to secure admission. He took the UTME again this year.

“Everyone knows him as someone who did not talk too much. But no one knew exactly why he committed suicide. He was not working. He was usually at home. They were staying in a room and parlour. They are an average family.”

One of Ugochukwu’s neighbours, Oluja, said:
“I am shocked that Ugochukwu has passed on. I just returned from my church, only to learn that Ugochukwu was found hanging in his apartment.
“It was the policemen from FESTAC that took his body away. Everyone in the area is still in shock.
“I know that he had been worried about his admission to the university.
“He had tried several schools, but never made it. Also, he was having a financial problem. Maybe, it is the sum of these worries that made him commit suicide. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.”
