7,000 Nigerians forced out of Niger republic by the military

7,000 Nigerians forced out of Niger republic by the military

7,000 Nigerians who have been taking refuge in Lake Chad since Boko Haram attacks chased them from their villages in the North, are being forced out of Niger and back to Nigeria by the Nigerien military. The deportation started on Tuesday May 5th.

According to Voice of America, the Nigerians were forced out against their will following Boko Haram's attacks on the island of Karamga in Lake Chad last month in which 74 Nigerien soldiers and civilians were killed. The Nigerians were deported in trucks and dumped in Yobe state by the Nigerien military. A photo of some of the Nigerians deported above.
Commenting on the deportation, Alhaji Muhammed Kanar, the northeast coordinator for Nigeria’s Emergency Management Agency NEMA , said, “From the first three days, we received nearly 4,000. And in fact, another batch of nearly 3,000 or above, we are now in the process of registration.”.
Karl Steinacker, Niger's representative for the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, criticized the Nigerien government for sending the Nigerians back home and putting them at risk. Nigerians and Nigeriens lived around the Lake Chad but the Nigeriens were sent to communities and towns in Niger republic while the Nigerians who are taking refuge in the Lake Chad were deported to Yobe state in trucks.

"Those islands are home to both Nigerians and Nigeriens working in the fishing industry. But, while citizens of Niger are moving into cities and towns, Nigerians have nowhere to go but back across the border. People’s livelihoods have been destroyed because they have been told you can no longer live and work on the lake, and now they are told, OK, but in any event, we’ll take you back to your country. So they say yes… What other options do they have? Even if they are migrants, the question is, is it appropriate to send them back, and is it the right way it’s being handled, and I guess in both cases it is no," he said.

Lagos monarch threatens to expose those who worked against Buhari during 2015 elections

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has threatened to expose people who he says worked against Buhari during the 2015 election. He said this at an occasion to mark the 2, 900 days of Fashola as governor of Lagos state
“A lot of things have been happening now. Some people have been telling Buhari all sorts of things. Awujale and I have decided to meet Buhari because Lagos and South West states must benefit from the Buhari administration. People, who are now telling Buhari all sorts of things, are sycophants. They did not want Buhari to emerge winner in the election. These people know themselves. When it gets to a stage, I will name them one after the other. I am not afraid of human beings."  he said.

Jimi Agbaje Will Never Be Governor - Oba of Lagos

Jimi Agbaje Will Never Be Governor - Oba of Lagos

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, says Jimi Agbaje who contested and lost the Lagos governorship seat in the last governorship election will never be governor of Lagos state.

Oba Akiolu who first stated this in April while making his controversial speech to Igbo leaders, said he still maintains his position that Mr Agbaje will not be governor of the state. Oba Akiolu said this while speaking at the public policy lecture organized by the Institute of Directors, IoD and launch of the book "The Example: The Era of Babatunde Raji Fashola as Governor of Lagos State,’ in Lagos yesterday May 6th. Read below what the Oba said

"On May 14, 2014 when I first told all residents of Lagos that the next governor of the state will be Ambode, many didn’t believe me. I knew all the waters that have passed under the bridge, including my own blood relations, who without consulting me went with others to say that Bola Tinubu, Fashola and Oba Akiolu have pocketed Lagos, saying that this time, they will not allow that. And I told them that Jimi (Agbaje) will never be the governor. I still maintain it. There is no going back. I have no doubt in my mind, with the cooperation and prayers of everyone, Ambode will perform very well. I told many people that Bola Tinubu planted the seed, Fashola came and watered the seed and it started germinating in geometrical progressions. We have just started" he said (Source: Vanguard)

ELECTION: Burundians Protest President's 3rd Term Bid

ELECTION: Burundians Protest President's 3rd Term Bid

Burundi's president Pierre Nkurunziza is running for a third term which he promises will be his last but citizens don't want to hear any of it. There have been demonstrations in the country for almost 2 weeks now, but it turned deadly this morning after one person was shot dead by police and 3 others seriously injured. The police reportedly used live ammunition to disperse protesters, killing one. 13 people have so far died since April 26th, the day demonstrations began following Pres. Nkurunziza announcement that he would seek re-election.

The fight is happening in Burundi's capital Bujumbura between the president's supporters and people who want him out. Many protesters have also been arrested and are being held by government forces.

Burundi's constitutional court on Tuesday May 5th ruled that the president can run for a third term if he wants, that he wasn't violating the constitution's two-term limit, saying "renewal of the presidential term through direct universal suffrage" is permitted. This didn't go down well with the opponents who say it violates their constitution.

Burundi's election will hold on June 26th and citizens say they want another president.

Over 25,000 Burundians have fled the country to neigbouring countries following the violent protests. They say they are afraid there might be another civil war in the country. The last one ended in 2006 after 13 years.

Emotional Letter To Indonesian President: Is executing my son fair and just?

Emotional Letter To Indonesian President: Is executing my son fair and just?

The mother of Myuran Sukumaran (pictured left), one of the two Australians executed alongside 7 others for drug related offences in Indonesia on April 28th, has written an emotional open letter to Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, describing the pain of losing her child.

In the letter, she criticized the President for refusing to grant her son and others clemency despite pleas from everyone. Read the letter after the cut...

Dear Mr President,
Leader of Indonesia and father of three children, My name is Raji Sukumaran, and my son, Myuran Sukumaran, was executed in the early hours of Wednesday 29 April 2015 under your instructions. As I make the preparations to bury my beautiful son, I thought I would share my feelings with you. I thought I would share how my son was reformed, was full of life, love and passion, and who so desperately wanted to live his life in service to help others. I have made this letter open in the hope that it may help other people or their families, in some way as they sit and wait for you to order their deaths. I would really like to think that you would be able to understand, if you don't, then feel free to share this letter with your wife, who I think would understand, one mother to another.

My son doesn't want another mother, father, sister or brother to go through what we went through. For no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or friends should have to deal with what we've had to deal with. I am not sure where you were as the men you ordered to kill my son, and seven others pulled the trigger but I am sure you were far away. My son died knowing all his loved ones were close by waiting in a hotel room to hear the news that he had been executed.

My son did commit a serious crime but he also apologised to your country and your people many times. In the last 10 years while you kept him in prison, he chose to do all within his power to make up for his crime. It wasn't easy, I am not sure anyone will ever realise how hard good man in prison, to be a positive role model for other younger prisoners, Indonesian prisoners.

Myu spent many years rehabilitating so many prisoners, he hoped that he could help as many people as possible, to give them a chance to leave prison to go out in the world a little better than they came inside. Myu helped prisoners who struggled with drug use and many other issues. My son never asked for his rehabilitation to be enough to free him from prison, all he asked was that he not be killed. Was it too much for you to let him live the remainder of his life in prison? I have heard that many others around you took the time to read and learn of the works of my son, and of Andrew and of the people they helped.

Many of whom are now helping other people themselves. I cannot believe that all of his works could not even get you to even read the paper you were signing. I remember when you were elected as President of Indonesia, my son was celebrating. My son told me that 'Our new President is a man of the people, a person that would support education, rehabilitation and people bettering themselves' and that you would look into everything he had done in the prison. I guess he was wrong.

As human being, I can't even understand how you could sign a person's death without looking into their personal circumstances. If you do not read what you are signing how can you know whether the life you are taking belongs to someone who is mentally unwell or on a wheelchair, or young mother with two children, or a father of two, or a man who has been in your prison for 17 years, or a gospel singer, or two young boys who made foolish mistakes.

My son only hoped to live in prison for the remainder of his life so that he could be able to continue his good work, which has become known around the world. All he wanted was to be given a chance to do that. I as a mother was punished for 10 years as well for his crime, and I will be punished for the rest of my life now because you took his lifesend my son home. I just asked you not to order his death but instead you ignored me and many others. I asked to meet you, to speak to you but once again you could not even have the courage to face our requests to communicate with you. I will not have the chance to see him get married, have children. Mr President, do you think that your punishment towards my son after he had spent 10 years in gaol reformed and helping others and then executing him is fair and just? Do you as a leader feel that everyone who faces justice in Indonesia is treated fairly and equally? Do you believe that Indonesia has a justice system that doesn?t make mistakes? Do you not hear or read all the stories about corruption in criminal cases? I think this is something very important - you have told the thousands and thousands of people in prisons across your country, that no matter how hard you work, no matter how much you change your life, no matter what your personal circumstances are - you will not receive mercy. You ask them to not try, as I have never heard of anyone in prison around the world doing the works my son has done - it was still not enough for you to read his clemency application. I hope your wife would understand what myself and Andrew Chan's mother are going through. I felt so helpless as I watched my son walk away, healthy and full of life. I watched as over the last four months you tortured him by making jokes about his life, making him guess the night he would be taken, openly discussing the way in which he would die, parading and humiliating our family. We made funeral plans for our sons while they were still alive.

This was because we were told you the President had not changed your mind, and that you had ordered the executions to be carried out, despite the world wide outcry to let our sons live. I want to ask you to put your family in my situation. Only days before I saw a video in which you said that you did not want Indonesians to be killed overseas. I know as I write this letter, the death of our children will not make any difference to drug trade in Indonesia. I am sure you know this, and that your reasons for taking these 8 lives had nothing to do with preventing drugs and everything to do with your politics.

I hope that your children, your grandchildren, your nephews and nieces never make a mistake. I also want you to remember when your child falls in love, gets married, makes plans for the future, that Andrew Chan also fell in love, made plans for his future and was executed. How would it feel if this was your son? I was told as my son said his last words, one of the last things he did was say a prayer for Indonesia. My son sought forgiveness for your country and the men taking his life, as he knew you did not know what you were doing. This was the man you ordered to die. I am not sure whether I could ever forgive you, I hope that I have that much grace and compassion in my heart one day. But I am sure this pain in my heart will stay with me for the rest of my life, and it hurts so much.

Think for a second, one of your children is tied to post, and men are lined up in front of them and the fear he would have felt, and then your child is shot through the heart. My son was young and foolish, he did not deserve to suffer like this. My son will be missed by so many people who love him and so many people are ?nding it dif?cult to come to terms with what has happened.

As I finish this letter I pray for the many other men and women whose lives are in your hands, especially those on death row. I pray that you will have the courage to look beyond the politics for they too have families who love them despite their mistakes.

NDLEA Arrests Pastor With 1.978kg Of Heroin Enugu (See Photo)

Operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, AIIA, Enugu, have arrested a Lagos pastor over drug trafficking.
The suspect, Daniel Lanre Akintola, 43, was caught with 1.978kg of heroin concealed in the false bottom of his luggage. This is coming just a few weeks after a Lagos-based pastor was arrested for smuggling narcotics to South Africa at the Lagos Airport.
Vanguard gathered that another suspect, Onwueg-busi Tochukwu Victor, 48, was also arrested with 51.5kg of ephedrine found inside his luggage.
NDLEA commander at the Enugu Airport, Mr. Nsikak-Abasi Udoh, disclosed that the 43-year-old pastor wanted to abandon his luggage at the arrival hall for fear of arrest.

He said: “Mr. Daniel Lanre Akintola unlawfully possessed 1.978kg of heroin, while returning from Entebbe, a major town in Central Uganda.

“He wanted to abandon the luggage, but we detected his intention. The drug was carefully concealed in a false bottom of his luggage.

“The second suspect is a businessman who had parcels of ephedrine weighing 51.5kg, which he wanted to smuggle to Ma-puto, Mozambique.

They are being investigated.” Akintola, who claimed ownership of the bag containing heroin, said he was returning from a pastor’s conference.

He said: “I am a pastor with one of the pentecostal churches, at Ipaja, Lagos. I attended a minister’s conference in Uganda.“This bag, where heroin was found, is my bag but I am a pastor and not a drug trafficker.”

The suspect, who hails from Oyo State but lives in Lagos, could not produce evidence that he actually attended a minister’s conference in Uganda.

Besides, he also did not give any reason for leaving Entebbe, Uganda, en-route Addis Ababa, to Enugu.

Supreme Court Orders NASS, FG To Maintain Status Quo Over Constitution Amendment

The Supreme Court, Nigeria’s apex court, Thursday, ordered the Federal Government and the National Assembly to maintain status quo in a suit filed by Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, on the constitution amendment exercise carried out by the National Assembly.

The Federal Government had dragged the lawmakers before the Supreme Court, after President Jonathan vetoed the amendments carried out by both chambers of the National Assembly, citing irregularities in the process that led to the amendments.

The President also queried the rationale behind the whittling down of the powers vested in the executive and allegedly transferred to the legislature.

Court Restrains Niger State Assembly From Impeaching Aliyu

Aliyu

Niger State governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu on Wednesday evening got a Minna High Court interim injunction restraining the State House of Assembly from setting in motion any process of impeaching him.

Honourable Justice Idris Evuti granted the three prayers as deposed to in an affidavit by the State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Abdullahi Bawa Wuse.
The suit no NSHC/MN/54/2015 instituted by the governor against the Speaker Isah Kawu, the Clerk, the assembly and two others.

By the action, the executive arm must have recognised the leadership of Kawu who was elected on Monday after the impeachment of Barrister Adamu Usman and three other principal officers by 19 out of 25 members of the house.

The governor had on Wednesday exonerated himself from the crisis ridden State House of Assembly saying that the face-off “is internal”.

He also said he was not targeted for impeachment by the crisis that erupted in the assembly on Monday, which led to the sacking of the house principal officers including the Speaker Adamu Usman.
The governor in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Israel Ebije, said speculation of impeachment moves against him by the assembly was false and should be treated as such.
Aliyu claimed he has been enjoying robust relationship with the House of Assembly.

We Won't Fail Nigerians - Gen. Buhari

We Won't Fail Nigerians - Gen. Buhari

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, reassured Nigerians that the incoming government of All Progressives Congress, APC, will not fail them.

Buhari, who hosted a delegation from Taraba State, also said by the end of his tenure in 2019, Nigerians would be confident of a society where elections would be free, fair and credible. Also, to underscore his inclination to the rule of law, the President-elect directed security personnel attached to his convoy to always heed traffic regulations and stop at red lights.

The President-elect also said the advent of the technology of card reader and the will of the Nigerians have redefined the electoral system in Nigerian.

He said: “I think that 2015 will go down in Nigeria political history as a glorious year. Nigerians have deliberately understood what is multi party democracy. But we thank God for technology, PVC and card reader and the insistence of constituencies to make sure they are used.

“However, in two political zones where they were subverted, the people wanted to vote, but they were not allowed to vote and they continued with what they used to do in their party offices or their sitting rooms, where they would write the results, go to radio house and television house and announce the result and say whoever does not accept the result should go to court.

“How many people can go to court when they are struggling to get the next day’s meal?  Where will they get the millions to give to those Senior Advocates of Nigeria. I was able to do it because of the goodwill of Nigeria which again demonstrated itself this year.

“People agreed that I am not a very rich man, but I was lucky that Nigerians believe in me and they put their strength together, voted and made sure that their votes count. I say thanks to the technology. Please continue to support those among you that you feel will go and work for your state and for the country. I assure you that the government of the APC, when eventually put in place, will be a competent Nigerian government.

“We will never betray the people because they have risked everything. Some even lost their lives in this course to make sure that APC succeed and that we have a leadership in place that they can trust and that is what multi party democracy is all about.”

He further stated: “I will tell you what made me a multi party democrat. In 1991, after coming out of detention, I was sitting at home and the Soviet Union collapsed.

They were the world power fighting the western world. They had more sophisticated weapons, but something happened. “There was confusion and everybody went away. Today, there are 18 countries from the former Soviet Union. That was when I believed that multi party democratic system is a superior form of governance and that is why I joined democracy.

“We have made a big stride this year and I assure you, God willing, if we survive the next four years, Nigerians will be in a position to confidently raise their head and elect their representatives and leaders. “They will choose those they want as their representatives from local government, states and to the centre.

I will fight for free, fair and credible election because that is why I remain in politics. I thank you very much for the sacrifices you have made to make sure we succeeded.”

In regards to ther rule of law, Buhari has directed security personnel attached to his convoy to always heed traffic regulations and stop at red lights at traffic points.
“Without leadership by example, the ordinary citizens would become copycats of the lawlessness of their leaders,” Buhari was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his media office last night.

The President-elect, who currently stops at every traffic light, promised to continue with the tradition as president as a way of demystifying the arrogance in power. Buhari was further quoted as saying that the “arrogance of power, lawlessness and disregard for the rights and convenience of fellow citizens would have no place in his government.”

The statement quoted Buhari as saying that for leaders to inspire respect, they must obey the laws of the country, adding that when leaders treat the country’s laws with contempt, they send the wrong message to the citizens. Buhari lamented a situation where fellow citizens are punished at traffic points and public roads because of the “arrogant lawlessness of the leaders.”

Refrain From Blackmailing The President - Prof Alkali warns

Refrain From Blackmailing The President - Prof Alkali warns

The Presidency on Wednesday warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) to talk less and plan more as the nation moves towards the 29th May inauguration ceremony between President Goodluck Jonathan and president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The warning was given by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali.

Prof. Alkali's warning was sequel to the alarm raised by the All Progressives Congress, APC, that President Jonathan is running the economy aground before handing.

According to Alkali, “the allegation is immature, reckless and out of tune with the President’s desire and patriotic commitment to a peaceful transfer of power”.

Alkali , in a press statement in Abuja, said, “Nigerians will recall that shortly after the results of the Presidential elections were announced, President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a high powered transition committee to plan and organize a hitch free transition programme for the inauguration of the incoming administration.

“Surprisingly, it took the APC more than three weeks to wake up to its responsibility to constitute its own transition committee.
“How then can they turn round to accuse the government of frustrating the transition programme?, he asked
The Special Adviser to the President on Politics reminded the APC that “since the setting up of the committee, the President and the entire machinery of the Federal Government have been put on the transition mode and all government officers have been giving maximum cooperation to the incoming transition committee”.

He therefore cautioned the APC to refrain from blackmailing the President over recent Federal Government policies and decisions saying that “by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Jonathan remains in office up to the 29th of May 2015 when he formally hands over to the incoming President”.

Alkali further warned that the President should not be stampeded, coerced or undermined in the exercise of his constitutional responsibilities.
According to him, “the machinery of government cannot be put on hold or frozen because the country is in transition”.

On the allegations that government is running the economy aground, Prof. Alkali reminded APC that “governance is a serious business.

He added that with the sudden and unexpected concession of victory to them, it appears that the APC is beginning to face the full reality of managing the great challenges of a complex nation”.
The Political Adviser observed that the APC’s “recent, frequent and unnecessary attacks on the President clearly shows that they are losing their nerves and are beginning to lay the foundation to justify their failures in the near future”

He added,  “and we want to remind them that Nigerians are not ready to accept any excuses for their failure.
“They promised to bring change so they must bring positive change to the well being of Nigerians and urgently too”.

Prof. Alkali urged the APC to give space to the joint transition committee to work in harmony to ensure a peaceful and seamless transition.

FG Not Responsible For Failure of States To Pay Salaries - Finance Minister

FG Not Responsible For Failure of States To Pay Salaries - Finance Minister

The Federal Ministry of Finance said the Federal Government was not responsible for the failure of state governments to pay workers’ salaries.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Paul Nwabuikwu, spokesman to the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in Abuja on Wednesday.

“Regarding difficulties in salary payment, certain governors are trying to blame the federal government for their predicaments.
“This is wrong. They had been told through the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee to prioritize salaries, they chose not to do so, hence the backlog that some states are experiencing”, it said.
The statement also added that the 50%  drop in revenues simply meant that salaries should be prioritized and that the federal government should not be blamed for mistakes that could have been avoided but made at state level.

It added that it was wrong to allege that federal workers were being owed salaries.
“This is incorrect. Staff salaries at the federal level are up to date; workers have received their April salaries”, it added.

Generator Repairer Stabbed A Security Officer To Death In Lagos

Generator Repairer Stabbed A Security Officer To Death In Lagos

The suspect

The Chief Security Officer of the God’s Own Estate in Ijanikin, Badagry, Lagos Tochukwu Ejika, has died following stab wounds he sustained during a fight with a generator repairer, Ayo Abimbola, pictured above, on May 3rd. According to Punch, the suspect had gone to repair the generator of a friend of his in the said estate when the incident happened.
"I repair generators for people in that estate and I have been doing the job since 2001. I had stayed in four different apartments but I was sent out of my last apartment because my landlord was always trying to interfere in my personal affair. He always complained that I beat my girlfriend. My friend, Olokun, on Friday invited me to repair his generator. I went to his house with some clothes because I planned to beg him to let me stay with him for a few days. He was not at home, but I met his wife. After repairing the generator, I dropped the bag there and told his wife to explain to him that I would like to live with them for a while. I went back to the area the next day to repair generators for some more people. It was when I finished that I went back to Olokun’s house to know if I could stay with him.” the suspect said
According to him, on getting to his friend's house at about 8pm, the wife told him that the husband declined his request and he picked his belongings and left the estate. He said as he was leaving, he met with the deceased who ordered him to return to where he was coming from
"I did not know he was the chief security officer and he did not tell me who he was. But when he said I should go back, I decided to approach him and explain what was happening to him. He picked a plank and hit me in the head with it. I dragged the plank from him and stabbed him in the head too. He became angry and picked a dagger and stabbed me in the elbow. In annoyance, I seized it from him and struck him in the stomach and he fell down,” he said.
The deceased died moments later. The suspect was apprehended by other security officers who beat him up and handed him over to the Ijanikin police men.

The Lagos state police command spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the incident, said the matter has been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Panti for further investigation.

Gen Buhari orders security personnel attached to him to always obey traffic order

President elect, Gen. Buhari has reportedly ordered aides and security personnel attached to him to always obey traffic regulations during all his movements in any part of the country. In a statement released and signed by his media team in Abuja yesterday May 6th, Buhari said leadership without example will cause ordinary citizens to copy the lawlessness of their leaders. Above is a picture of his convoy waiting at a traffic light.

"Without leadership by example, the ordinary citizens would become copycats of the lawlessness of their leaders”
He went further by stating that “arrogance of power, lawlessness and disregard for the rights and convenience of fellow citizens would have no place in his government”.

He said in a democracy, leaders should not inconvenience their citizens or cause them to experience unbearable ordeals for their own comfort.

The President-elect advised his military and police security personnel to be in tune with his philosophy of “bringing the rule of law in the conduct of leaders during their movements on public roads.”

Kim Kardashian's BFF slams Amber Rose and Blac Chyna as 'Ghetto, street bullies'

Kim Kardashian's BFF slams Amber Rose and Blac Chyna as 'Ghetto, street bullies'

Kim Kardashian's BFF Jonathan Cheban has inserted himself right in the middle of the Kardashian-Jenner family's feud with Amber Rose and Blac Chyna.

In an interview with RadarOnline, the 41 year old former CEO of a public relations firm, who now runs his own gossip website TheDishh.com, didn't hold back.

“Kylie’s young, they’re not. They are bullies,” Cheban told the website of Rose and Chyna. “Both of them are kind of street. They take it to another level and they’re always looking for a fight."

Kylie and Chyna have been trading jabs via Instagram posts for the last few months, and recently Chyna has taken aim at Jenner over her famous lips.

Last month, when teens began attempting a bizarre quest for a pumped-up pout similar to Jenner's by sucking on a shot glass -- aptly called the #KylieJennerChallenge -- Chyna shared a photo of herself with almost clown-like huge red lips.

Even though Jenner has been fighting back in her own right, Cheban clearly feels protective of the teen.
"I want to bully them back. They're really aggressive. They should at least wait till Kylie is 18," he told RadarOnline. “I want to show them what it is like. I’m not taking sides. They’re too ghetto, too street. They’re bullies.”

He also told the website that should any video from their pasts as strippers emerge, he'll be happy to post them on his site.
“I’ll put crazy videos of them up. People want to see them. It doesn’t get any classier with these two," he said.

Jonathan Is A Disappointment We Won't Welcome Him – Ex-militant, Boyloaf

Jonathan Is A Disappointment We Won't Welcome Him – Ex-militant, Boyloaf

Ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Ebikabowi Victor Ben, popularly known as Boyloaf , has slammed President Goodluck Jonathan for not doing anything to benefit his home state, Bayelsa, describing the outgoing President as a disappointment.
He said;
“To me, as a matter of fact Jonathan disappointed us. That is my own opinion. He disappointed us. To me, he disappointed us. He might be good to some people. There is nothing to tell if you get to my own state. We didn’t benefit. People like us did not benefit from his government. His government focused on one side. The Bayelsans did not benefit. It is only the Arugbos – that is Ondo State and Delta State – that benefited from his government. So, someone like me will not welcome him. I will not welcome him at all. The struggle continues.
“The ordinary people in Bayelsa are even bitterer than I am. Jonathan empowered many foot soldiers, the Niger Delta ex-agitators, and foot soldiers. But in Bayelsa, he didn’t empower people and that is the state he comes from.
On threats by some ex-militants to go back to the creeks if Jonathan does not win the 2015 presidential election, Boyloaf asked:
Who will go to war? Is Nigeria for one ethnic region? Nigeria is for everybody. It is not for one ethnic region. When you want to oppress one region that is when the region will stand up for their right. But we are all Nigerians. Nobody will go to war. Who will go to war?”
On allegations that the North and the South West ganged up against Jonathan to wrestle power from him because of feelings of marginalization, Boyloaf insisted it was rather the North and the SouthWest that benefitted from the Jonathan administration.
“Did people from the South-South benefit? If you come to Bayelsa State, can you count how many people benefited? That is the president’s state. When the APC was going for campaigns, they made a statement that there is a town that they didn’t have light, and people said Otuoke. Then (Gov. Chibuike) Amaechi said “I didn’t mention name”. But can you imagine that in that place there is no road? You see, what Jonathan did was that he favoured the North and West. Go to the Niger Delta and see. He favoured the North. He did Almajiri. Then go to the West you will see the railway, you will see all what he’s doing there. What is happening in Niger Delta? Nothing! It is better to go there and see things for yourself. Jonathan did not do anything for his people, for his region.
“Charity begins at home. Jonathan was supposed to have started from his area because anything can happen the next day like what has happened now. What about (late President Umaru) Yar’Adua? He did the airport in Katsina. He started from his own area. See, that is what Jonathan was supposed to do to. I have that belief right from time because they never wanted a Niger Delta person to be in government. We know that one because they will seal a lot of deals. I am a mariner. I know what is going on at the sea. For instance, like we are talking about subsidy, we know the people that do deals.
The ex-militant leader however gave conditions with which the Niger Delta will work with the incoming administration of General Muhammadu Buhari, insisting that the government must be ready to continue with the East-West Road, the Amnesty program and the continuous existence of the Niger Delta ministry.

Referring to the East-West Road, Boyloaf said:
“I am not afraid of anything. I am fully confident and if they terminate it the better for us because we will know that the government doesn’t want peace. So, that’s my own belief. I’m not afraid of anything. We will be ready to work with any person that has the Niger Delta people at heart. If you come with good ideas I think we will also work with you. We will see what will happen. God is not a man. If he terminates the contracts, I think there are other ways we can make it from. So, nobody cares.
Continuing, Boyloaf said if he (Buhari) wants to work with the region, they will be ready to work with him also.
“I think there is nobody that will come into this country that will not want the assistance of the Niger Delta. This is because that is where the major resource of this country comes from. So, you must need the Niger Delta people except you want division in the country. That is when you don’t have the love for the people of this nation”.
On calls from different quarters for the scrapping of the Niger Delta Amnesty program, Boyloaf insisted those making such calls do not have the interest of the nation at heart. According to him, the Amnesty program has ensured great increase in the volume of production of crude oil production in the country.
“The production of crude oil this time around compared to some years back is increasing and the amnesty is something that has come to stay. And if the government wants to scrap the amnesty, it means the government doesn’t mean well for the nation. That’s my own belief. Let me tell you something – people were also inciting others that the government wants to scrap the amnesty. I have been in the Niger Delta trying to pacify them and telling them that it is a lie and that the government will work with them. They wanted to start destruction. There is no way that you will come out and say you will scrap the amnesty. How many people can you kill? How many? The Niger Delta terrain is very different and our struggle is very sacrosanct. That is one thing you get. So you cannot kill everybody. Look at Boko Haram – their area is a desert and it is easy for vehicles to move.
