Amnesty International supports decriminalization of prostitution

Amnesty International supports decriminalization of prostitution

Amnesty International at its International Council Meeting in Dublin, Ireland today Tuesday August 11, 2015 voted in support of policy calling for decriminalization of prostitution despite strong opposition from religious leaders and celebrities.

Amnesty International secretary-general Salil Shetty in a statement said,
"This is a historic day for Amnesty International. It was not a decision that was reached easily or quickly and we thank all our members from around the world, as well as all the many groups we consulted, for their important contribution to this debate.
They have helped us reach an important decision that will shape this area of our human rights work going forward. Sex workers are one of the most marginalized groups in the world who in most instances face constant risk of discrimination, violence and abuse"

Official Public Statement from Amnesty International
At its International Council Meeting in Dublin, Ireland, Amnesty International adopted a resolution outlining principles that will lead to a new global policy to protect and uphold the human rights of sex workers .

The principles seek to protect people of all genders who are involved in the sex trade - and who face deep marginalization and discrimination in countries around the world - from violence and other human rights abuses.

The resolution directs Amnesty International's Board to adopt a policysupporting the full. decriminalization of consensual adult sex work, while continuing to advocate for full and effective enforcement of laws and policies to prevent and redress
violence, trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children.

These principles include the obligation of governments to protect the human rights of sex workers, including women’s rights, gender equality, LGBTI rights, children’s rights, the rights of
Indigenous peoples, non-discrimination, access to justice, health, security of the person, the right to a livelihood, and protection from exploitation.

The resolution also obliges states to ensure that laws and policies do not contribute to further risk to sex workers by calling on states to "review and repeal laws that make sex workers vulnerable to human rights violations,
but also refrain from enacting such laws."

The principles also highlight that states have an obligation to ensure that the economic, social and cultural rights of all people are upheld so that no one is forced into sex work, or is unable to leave the sex trade, because of economic pressure. The resolution recognizes and respects the agency of sex workers to articulate their own experiences and define the most appropriate solutions to ensure their own welfare and safety.

Amnesty International has long expressed concern over the high levels of violence facing sex workers in Canada, especially the heightened risks faced by the disproportionate numbers of Indigenous people in the sex trade.

We have called on government and law enforcement to ensure that their actions reduce, rather than increase, this risk. The issue of harm reduction was at the heart of the Supreme Court decision in the Bedford case which struck down Canada's previous prostitution laws. This is one of the issues that Amnesty International will review once a new global policy is adopted.

Gov Ambode Urges President Buhari To Disband Presidential Task Force

Ambode-Buhari

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to disband the Presidential Task force Implementation Committee on the alienation of Federal Government Landed Properties.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, the Governor said members of the Task Force are carrying out duties inimical to the interest of the State and Federal Government in Lagos.

The Governor’s call is coming on the heels of several petitions lamenting the nefarious and reprehensible activities of the Presidential Task Force on the alienation of Federal Government Landed Properties in Lagos.

According to him, the Task Force, whose existence and legality was still in doubt have unlawfully embarked on a brazen seizure, take over and appropriation of state and federal government properties.
He said the activities of the Task Force has left in its wake a near total destruction, displacement, stoppage including unprovoked mass harassment, intimidation, molestation and denial of the original owners of the land and properties.

Governor Ambode expressed concern that the activities of the Task Force is coming despite their knowledge of an existence of a consent judgment duly entered into by the same committee and some of the petitioners on one hand and an order of Interlocutory Injunction granted by the High Court of Lagos State, with the restraining orders widely published in newspapers.

The Governor therefore called on President Buhari to immediately disband the Task Force, so as to forestall a breakdown of law and order, stressing that their activities presently constitutes a security risk in the state.
It would be recalled that the committee began its operations during the era of the Jonathan administration.

No relocation of Edo IDPs - Oshiomhole
Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has assured Internally Displaced Persons in the state that they would not be relocated.
About 1,300 persons including 900 reportedly affected by the Boko Haram insurgency are in a camp operated by the International Christian Mission and located at Uhogua village in Ovia North East local government area of the state.

Oshiomhole, who spoke when he visited the camp on Tuesdayevening, said the state government would provide the necessary facilities to make their stay comfortable.
The governor denied being aware of any planned relocation of the IDPs, saying the action was caused by “communication gap.”
He said the state government would build a standard primary and secondary school and hostel for the IDPs educational support.
Oshiomhole noted that any Nigerian reserved the right to live and be treated well in any part of the country.
“Everybody is concerned that the kids should be save. Nobody had any negative motive in moving the children. Having lived in the North all my life I believe any where any Nigeria find himself should be his home. That is why we abolish indigeneship in this state,” the governor stated.

"My parents split up after 17 years of marriage" - Dakore Akande

Asked how she has been able to stay married, mother of two, Dakore Akande, who has been married for 5 years to Olu Akande, said;
"Yes, marriage is under siege but through a lot of prayer. Joint prayer. My husband and I, we make a point of duty to always pray together no matter the schedule. We just identify that God is our mainstay and that He is the third cord in our strand. I realized that whenever we start to deviate from that is when trouble would come. God instituted marriage and the only way it is going to work is if we tap into that source, which is God. And apart from that, it has to do with the encouragement of both families because the two families have to encourage each other. We do have our challenges, don’t get me wrong. My parents split up after seventeen years of marriage. I know what that means. I have that at the back of my mind. We did marriage counseling and that still helps." she told Icampus magazine

Jonathan told me & Obasanjo he never wanted to be Vice-President - Ex Gov. Donald Duke

Jonathan told me & Obasanjo he never wanted to be Vice-President - Ex Gov. Donald Duke

Former governor of Cross River state Donald Duke says former President Jonathan told him and former president Obasanjo he never wanted to be the Vice president of Nigeria when he was selected to be the running mate to late President Umaru Yar'Adua for the 2007 general election. Donald Duke said this in an interview with news magazine, The Interviewer
"You don’t give authority to an unwilling person, particularly in a country like Nigeria. Umaru never wanted to be president. He was dealing with his health issues and wanted to retire and go lecture in a university. He was really offered an appointment at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Jonathan, on the other hand, had just been re-elected to be governor of Bayelsa and when he was picked, he was not so pleased. He said to Obasanjo and me, ‘I don’t want this job".

If these two men never aspired to the office but were recruited to take on a responsibility as daunting as the management of Nigeria without mentally preparing for the office and having a grand vision of where they wanted to take Nigeria to, then there is a problem. The mental preparation is absolutely important. The vision can be scripted for you, but if you are not prepared and you have no capable team to help you follow through, it is grossly unfair. It is like converting a passenger on an aircraft to a pilot.”

President Buhari cancels federal govt delegation to Hajj, to save $1million

President Buhari cancels federal govt delegation to Hajj, to save $1million

President Buhari says there would be no federal government delegation for this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia. This is against the usual tradition of previous government where a federal government delegation will lead pilgrims to the holy land for the religious exercise.

President Buhari who said this yesterday August 10th, said the cancellation will however not stop the federal government from playing its traditional roles of providing consular, medical and security services to Nigerian pilgrims. With the decision, the government is expected to save about $1 million and N30m in local expenses.

If Buhari IS Serious About Fighting Corruption, He Should Do Away With People Of Questionable Character – Hon. Nkem-Abonta

If Buhari IS Serious About Fighting Corruption, He Should Do Away With People Of Questionable Character – Hon. Nkem-Abonta

Muhammadu Buhari

The lawmaker representing Ukwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, has cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari against surrounding himself with people of ‘questionable character’ if he is serious about fighting corruption.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday, Nkem-Abonta said his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not wrong in cautioning the president against a selective fight against corruption.

However, he noted that time would tell whether the anti-corruption fight of the current administration can be considered selective.

“As a lawmaker and a Nigerian, I think that he has been slow, but he said he is steady. But I believe that time will tell if the anti-corruption stand of the president is being targeted at some perceived enemies. All that the PDP said was to caution against targeting people. I think there is nothing wrong with that,” he said.

Nkem-Abonta also appealed for a review of the death sentence passed on some soldiers by a military court for defaulting in the prosecution of the war against Boko Haram in the North-east.

“Under the circumstances those men fought, anybody would rebel. We were also told that there were infiltrators. We are yet to get the full story of what transpired in the military tribunal, it should be made available so that we can know the statements of the court marshaled soldiers, and the defence available to them,” he said.

“Some of them acted on impulse. So, the authorities should tamper justice with mercy by carrying out a total review of the law so as to give encouragement to their compatriots still in the theatre of war. Their cases should be reviewed and the sentences could be reduced. But the authorities must be careful about it so that we do not cause disobedience in the military,” he noted.

NSCDC officers allegedly kill family's only child in Imo community

NSCDC officers allegedly kill family's only child in Imo community

26-year-old Okechuku Izuchukwu Iwuchukwu, a tricycle (keke) operator, allegedly died in the hands of some men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Orji, Imo state.

Okey, as he was popularly called, was the only child of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sunday Iwuchukwu.
Okey's wife, Mrs. Obianuju Iwuchukwu, is expecting the couple’s first child.
Traditional ruler of the community and the Acting Commandant General, Imo State Peace Advocate Corps, Hon. Peter C. Ohagwa were sent by the state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, to plead with the people to of the town to maintain peace. Their pleas calmed the people of the community and averted a reprisal.

According to eyewitnesses, Okechukwu, who recently returned from Pakistan where he went in search of greener pastures before going into the keke transport business, was allegedly returning from work when he saw some group of people lying on the ground, so he thought some robbers were operating in the area.
He turned round to escape, but two officers of the NSCDC who were operating an illegal checkpoint in the area reportedly opened fire on him, killing him instantly.

In a petition sent to the Imo State Police Commissioner through their lawyer, Mr. Williams N. Opara of Osuoha, Opara & Co., Ahuruole-Florence Chambers, Owerri, the family expressed shock that the killers of their only child branded the deceased an armed robber who had a shoot-out with them.

The petition partly reads:
“It is our brief that our client’s only child was gruesomely murdered by Inspector Ekere Harrison Ifeanyi and Sergeant Ojoko Paul, who are men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to its headquarters in Owerri on Saturday, the 25th day of July, 2015 at about 11.00pm when he was riding home on his way back from work at Old ELF Petrol Station situate along Umundula, Owaelu, Owalla Road, Off Orji Junction.
“Sir, it is our further briefing that it took these men of the Civil Defence Corps a period of five hours between 11.00pm to 4.00am to lodge a false report of a shoot-out with “armed robbers” at the Divisional Police Station, Orji which is a distance of less than one kilometre from the scene of the incident. And within the period, we are briefed, these men from the Civil Defence Corps were able to get an old and unused gun, one expended bullet and one live bullet which they planted on the body of our client’s son in order to brand him as “an armed robber” in order to justify their cruel and extra judicial killing of our client’s son.
“Sir, it is our brief that there was no report of any robbery and or armed robbery incident in the neighbourhood and or vicinity on the day our client’s son was killed. It is also our briefing that people were still carrying on with their various businesses around the scene and around the junction area.”
The petition stressed that the victim once rode a keke on hire purchase basis for somebody, which he eventually inherited and sold to a Civil Defence officer before the one in which he was killed was bought for him by his father.
The family called on the state police boss to use his good office to investigate the death of their son and bring the culprits to book.

One of the natives of Owaelu, who pleaded anonymity, said that the murder of Okechukwu was a big blow to the community, and that the traditional ruler even cried for the young man and his family.
He said:
“Okey is such a quiet boy who is loved by all. In fact, this is darkness for this family. Most annoying is branding this boy an armed robber, but they have failed in that because it happened where people were. It took these officers four hours to report the matter at the Orji police station. They used this period of interlude to organise an obsolete locally made gun and claimed they found it in his keke. When it became clear to them that the incident took place near living homes and that people saw what happened, they went to Governor Rochas Okorocha to intervene and plead with the family.
“In fact, it was when the senior police officer saw the gun that he got angry and sent his men to go and arrest the guys, and we are happy that they have been arrested and detained. So we plead with the President, Attorney General of the Federation, Imo State Governor, Imo State Chief Judge, Commissioner for Justice and all the authorities concerned to give us justice. His father has been down with stroke and his pregnant wife can no longer cope as he is the only son and the bread winner of the family.”
Father of the deceased, who is in his late 60s said:
“I am finished. My son is very responsible and does not look for problem. He hardly talks. He had before now travelled to Pakistan for greener pastures but it did not work out and he returned home. And instead of staying idle before any other trip could be arranged for him, he began this keke thing. You can see I have been down with stroke and he is the one taking care of all of us.
“The first keke he used was on hire purchase. He completed the money and it became his. But when the engine started to gulp oil, he dropped it and I bought him this one. He then sold that one to a Civil Defence officer and he has not even paid him for it.
“That night we were waiting for him to return. When the time passed, we called his number severally and it was not going. We all became worried and in the morning somebody called his wife and told him to come to the police station, that she should come with one of our brothers who they said was the last person he called. When they got to the police and seeing the condition of the wife, they asked them to go, pretending he was in the cell. They later called the man out and told him that he was in the hospital.
“When the young man came back and reported the matter, he went with some people to see him in the hospital as the police did not tell them he was dead. They went with the police to Aladinma Hospital and they moved round the whole ward and could not see him. After a long time, they now asked the nurses and it was the nurses that led them to the mortuary where they deposited him. He was brought there dead and taken straight to the mortuary.
“Why would people be this wicked? What shall I do now? I want the government to bring those that killed my son to book. I want justice for my son. This is too much for us to bear. Look at his pregnant wife. Why? Why?”
However, when the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a deputy superintendent of the police (DSP) was contacted, he said the command got a report from the NSCDC of an encounter their officers had with armed robbers who engaged them in a shoot-out. That one of the robbers was gunned down.

Enwerem, who said he did not even know the name of the deceased, however said the NSCDC, as a security agency, would be in the best position to give details of what happened.
When asked about the alleged arrest of the NSCDC men, he said:
“I am not investigating. If there is any arrest made, I have not been informed.”
Hon. Ohagwa of the State Peace Advocate Corps, also said:
“You know our Governor Rochas Okorocha, anything that touches the people touches him. So when he got the report of this incident, he sent us to console the people and appeal to them to be calm. By God’s grace, we have stopped them from engaging in a reprisal. I know that the government will see that the matter is handled the way justice would be seen to have been done.”
