Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan Has the Right To Own Any Amount Of Money – IMU, Others Speak Out
Following an exclusive interview with Vanguard,
the Chairperson of Ijaw Mothers Union (IMU), Doris McDaniels, has
spoken out on the recent outburst over reports that former First lady,
Patience Jonathan, claimed ownership of a $31.4 million found in the
account of a company currently under investigations for fraud.
She stated that the former first lady can own any amount of
money as she was the wife of a deputy governor, governor, Vice President
and then a President.
She said; “I will commend Mrs Patience Jonathan because if this
is the allegation against her, then it is funny. So you mean the wife
of a former deputy governor, governor, Vice President, Acting President
and President cannot own this kind of money, yet wife of President
Muhammadu Buhari that is less than two years in office can travel with
the kind of bag as alleged recently? Then this is a funny country.
"If high-profile government officials, can own properties in
Dubai, yet we say wife of a former President can’t own this money, then
Nigeria is a laughing stock. EFCC should follow the law,” she said.
However a lawyer and National Coordinator, Centre for the
Vulnerable and the Underprivileged, Oghenejabor Ikimi, said the former
first lady needs to be investigated since her office as a first lady is
not known to come with remunerations.
“Patience should be investigated on how she got the money. We
agree that she was the wife of a Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice
President and lastly President. The sum is frightening, knowing that her
office, even as First Lady, does not attract remuneration.
"Even if it did attract cash benefits, was it in dollars and
how much did she receive? If the anti-graft agencies find her to have
amassed such wealth illegally, she should be tried to face the music.
She is not bigger than the country as former First Lady.”
In his reaction, Zik Gbemre, National Coordinator, Niger Delta Peace Coalition, NDPC, said:
“The NDPC does not understand the hullabaloo about investigating the
former First Lady for questionable wealth. She should be investigated
like anyone else suspected to be holding such questionable wealth.
“All anti-graft agencies need do is ensure they do their job
within the ambit of the law. People should not see this as a witch hunt
or oppression. The accused must also prove her innocence lawfully. She
has nothing to fear if she genuinely acquired such wealth. All she needs
is proof.”

universities across Nigeria but it has all been abortive.
Consequently, ASUU will give a warning strike which will start on Oct.
2nd. The strike will last for one week, and if they do not give us
listening ears, we will start the indefinite strike in November,” the
statement read.

Fund, funding of state universities, payment of earned academic

iPad owner turns detective as police tells her to knock on thief's door
A single mum of two, Sara Gration 37, turned detective in a bid to track down the home of an iPad thief as the police asked her to knock on the thief's door. "There's no one free... could you knock on the door?" Said the police.
She had rang the police to alert them in the hope that the thief could be caught, but was told that police did not have anyone who could go help.
It
was then suggested to her that the best way to catch the thief was to
turn sleuth herself and follow the tracker which lead her to an address.
But as she sat outside the suspect's house she became "absolutely petrified" after realising the danger she had been put in, and as such decided to flee the scene slamming the police for putting her in peril. The police have now
admitted it was a mistake asking her to do their job.
Sarah said: "I couldn't believe it, I was asked to turn
detective myself and was sent to a house where I could have been put in
danger."
The bizarre situation came about after Sara's car was broken into outside her home in Derby overnight Thursday into Friday.
She was alerted to the theft by a neighbour and went to her car, which was parked outside her home to see items had been stolen.
Among them was a gold iPad Air which was in a bag in the boot.
She
reported the incident to the police who told her they would not be able
to send an officer out and instead asked her to ask locally if anyone
had any CCTV.
Then, at around 1.30pm on Friday, she received an
email to her iPhone alerting her to the fact that someone had switched
on the stolen iPad at a house in another part of Derby.
The self-employed bookkeeper, said: "I immediately called to
notify police. I then got a call back five minutes later from them
telling me to go to the location, see if my iPad was there and knock on
doors in the area.
"I wanted my items back so I went and was petrified. No-one
was in at the house. I called police back after I went and explained but
no I received no apology.
"Derbyshire Police had the chance to
recover stolen items and potentially catch a thief but sent me instead.
By not following up on such a strong lead, it has probably ruined any
chance of conviction."
Sara, who has daughters Isabella, nine,
and Tamsin, seven, added: "I appreciate that having your car broken into
isn't exactly crime of the century and that it isn't a priority for
them.
19-year-old drugged and raped every day by her own Dad who called her 'my wife'
An audacious 19-year-old girl, named Emma
Burt, exposed her own dad, who for two good years, repeatedly drugged and raped her, referring her as his "wife".
She revealed how her biological father Christopher Wayne Edwards,
40, indecently photographed her during the sickening tirade of abuse. He has now been jailed for 12 years for the catalogue of sex offences.
Emma first went to live with Edwards in December 2012, at the age of 15, after a row with her mum.
Edwards abused Emma within a month of her moving in before attacking her daily after feeding her cannabis until she passed out.
By the time she escaped, Emma was addicted to amphetamines and cocaine that her father supplied her with, and she claims he raped her every single day.
Brave
Emma has waived her right to anonymity to speak out after Edwards was
jailed for 12 years for rape and four charges of sexual activity with a
child family member.
He also admitted one charge of possessing an indecent photograph of a
child and three charges of taking indecent photographs, and supplying
her with drugs.
Mum-of-one Emma, from Powys, Wales, who is now free from drugs
, said: "He was in and out of my life for a number of years but I was
15 when I moved in with him and the abuse started around a month or so
in.
"In the first two months of his abusing me, he would never talk about how he raped me.
"He just would sort of wait until I was asleep or close to sleeping,
then the drugs came into it from about three months on wards.
"It
got to the point where I was dependent on the drugs. I didn't have any
understanding of what was going on because I was too spaced out.
"Being
so reliant on the drugs caused multiple issues when I left, I've never
told anyone but people started to notice that I was weird or different." "He used to jokingly call me his wife. I was practically a wife."
Emma's dad started by sending her countless text messages in the early stages of grooming her.
In
April this year, Mold Crown Court heard how Edwards would first give
his daughter cannabis, then introduced her to harder class A and B
drugs.
This would then maintain Emma's stupefied condition in which she was raped and had indecent photographs taken of her.
She said: "I had this way of coping with the drugs which was like another persona.
"The more drugs I took, the more I could ignore what was going on."
Her severe mental health issues led Emma to jump off a bridge in December 2014, to "put an end to all of the pain".
Emma added: "That's when I thought 'now I need to say something'."
She escaped aged 17 after she broke down at a family party and her relatives called the police.
Emma said: "That's what I am hoping by revealing everything he has done - for this to save another girl.
"I
could have a daughter, and I want to speak out for a child like her and
let her know that she doesn't need to go through the pain that I did."
Edwards
pleaded guilty to rape, four charges of sexual activity, one charge of
possessing an indecent photograph and three charges of taking indecent
photographs, and supplying her with drugs.
He was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and a sexual harm prevention order was made.
Judge Niclas Parry told the court: "She became utterly reliant upon your drugs.
"You used drugs to facilitate the offences and took the most appalling images of her."

“There are supposedly rich
Nigerians who have everything about them financed by bank debts” - Emir Of Kano
The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has taken a swipe on some Nigerians about their wealth status. Read what he wrote on his twitter handle:
“Look at sovereign debt fueling growth. If you take the
example of an individual. You happen to know bank MDs and you can make a
few phone calls and get loans. You borrow N1 billion here today and
build a very nice mansion in Abuja. You borrow another N1 billion and
let your family go out on first class ticket as you are travelling all
over the world. You borrow another N5 to N6 billion and buy a private
jet. We have very many people in Nigeria who you think are very rich.
But, who are really bankrupt, because everything about them are being
financed by bank debts.
“When
one debt matures they have enough connections to call another bank,
borrow and refinance that debt. They are not earning anything.
“They
have private jets. They have yachts. Their families travel first class.
They go abroad and stay in the most expensive hotels. It happens. And it
is happening today.
“What
do you think of those people? When you think about such people, do you
think they are foolish people? Or do you think they are wise people? So,
what would you say of a country that does this? So, you feel growth by
borrowing money, pay salaries, people spend money on pure consumption
spending, nothing is produced. It’s fine.
It’s short term. But, it is not sustainable. How much can you continue to borrow and consume without producing?”
