Former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that he believes in the leadership qualities of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that he believes in the leadership of Buhari more than anybody at this present time.

Obasanjo also urged Nigerians not to compare the military era to the democratic system. The former president stated this while answering questions from reporters who waited at his Presidential Hilltop residence in Abeokuta on Saturday morning.

Obasanjo said “I believe General Buhari will fight corruption, he will give firm leadership. When he was there before, he was a military and military leader is both the executive and the legislative but in democracy, it is not possible like that.

“Moreso, military has been rendered impotent and I believe he will do everything to resuscitate it because he knows the military well, so he will do it, if he fails to do it, I will say shame unto him.”

Obasanjo appealed to President Jonathan not to listen to those who are creating phobia of Buhari and phobia of enquiry, adding that, the President has done well and he should rather have a dignified exit which will acclaim him as a patriot and true democrat.

He also appealed to the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that after the elections (which he believes Buhari will win) to find a way to allay the fears of many who see him as a threat in the area of human right, obedience of our constitution and rule of law.

He concluded by tasking every Nigerian to play their parts in the progress and development of this great country, saying, “for me I would not stop, there is nothing better than democracy. “And for those who are pushing President Jonathan, he should beware because when the chips are down, he will be naked and they will mock him at the end.

I wish President Goodluck Jonathan, General Muhammad Buhari and every Nigerian every good wish.

Obasanjo's plan to head an interim government exposed.

Presidency accuses OBJ of plotting political crisis in order to head an interim government.

Following his recent public remarks about the GEJ-led government, the Presidency has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of plotting a political crisis in Nigeria with the intention of forming an interim government which he hopes to head. In a statement released this night by Presidential media aide, Reuben Abati, the presidency accused the former president of sowing seeds of discords among Nigerians so that he could come back into power through the back door.

We find the false claims and allegations reportedly made against President Goodluck Jonathan by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta very odious and repugnant.

As we have had cause to say before, it is most regrettable indeed that a man like Chief Obasanjo, who should know better, chooses to repeatedly, wantonly, and maliciously impugn the integrity of a sitting President of his country for the primary purpose of self-promotion.

It is obvious from Chief Obasanjo’s serial vituperations against President Jonathan who is doing his best to positively transform Nigeria for the benefit of all of its people that he has willfully chosen to close his eyes to the present administration’s good works and intentions. For reasons best known to him, Chief Obasanjo has set his mind on regime change by fair or foul means.

Otherwise, it would be completely senseless, irrational and out of place for Chief Obasanjo, who still claims to belong to the same party as the President, to accuse President Jonathan of plotting to win the rescheduled presidential elections by “hook or crook” and planning to plunge the nation into crisis if he loses the election.

For the record, President Jonathan has no such intention and will continue to give the greatest possible support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant federal agencies to ensure that the rescheduled elections are successfully conducted.

Indeed, it is not President Jonathan who remains faithful to his oath of office who is trying to plunge Nigeria into crisis, but Chief Obasanjo who is scheming to plunge the country into chaos in pursuit of a selfish and highly egocentric agenda.

Chief Obasanjo’s plot with others within and outside the country to thwart the general elections and foist an unconstitutional Interim National Government, which he hopes to head on the nation is well known to us, but by the Grace of God Almighty, his odious plan to return to power through the back door will fail woefully.

We know very well that it is in pursuit of this nefarious plot that the former President continues to sow the seeds of discord and crises in the polity by purporting to remain in the ruling party while openly consorting with the opposition, endorsing its candidates and predicting victory for opposition candidates in a manner most unbecoming of a supposed elder statesman. Thankfully, the vast majority of Nigerians who are patriotic and right-thinking cannot be fooled by Chief Obasanjo’s antics.

We urge them to be assured that President Jonathan's commitment to democracy in all its ramifications remains constant and that he will never be party to the use of any unlawful means to remain in office or gain political advantage over his opponents.

The President stands by his commitment, which he reaffirmed on national television last Wednesday that on his watch, all elections in Nigeria, will be free, fair and credible, and that all certified election results will be respected. As President Jonathan has also assured the nation, the rescheduling of the general elections was in the best interest of the nation and was never driven by any ulterior motive on the part of government as Chief Obasanjo and others have alleged.

President Jonathan will continue to put his best efforts into giving Nigeria quality leadership and will not be distracted from his purpose by unwarranted and needless criticism by persons who ought to know better.

The President also continues to trust in the good judgment of Nigerians and to believe that in appreciation of his sincere efforts to move the country forward over the past four years, they will re-elect him for a second term on March 28, 2015 with a mandate to pursue his agenda for national transformation to a successful conclusion.

Fani-Kayode attacks his former boss, Obasanjo.

Fani-Kayode attacks Obasanjo for accusing Jonathan of “Gbagbo treatment” plot.

The spokesperson for President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode, has come down hard on former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comments that Mr. Jonathan is planning a “Gbagbo treatment” for Nigeria.

Obasanjo, who addressed journalists at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta on Saturday, said President Jonathan may be working towards a controversial poll and possibly exit from office the same way former Ivorian president, Laurent Gbagbo, did in his country. He advised President  Jonathan not to destroy his name for selfish reasons.

In  reaction to this, Mr. Fani-Kayode who also served as minister and spokesperson for Obasanjo’s administration took strong exception to his former boss’ remarks.

“We reject President Obasanjo’s very serious and grave allegations and we are not in the least bit disturbed by them because we know that they have no basis in truth, rationality or reason,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said.

“The days of anyone attempting to rule by proxy or through surrogates are long over because we have all come of age. President Jonathan is ready for this election and the PDP will win it hands down despite all the lies and propaganda that is being peddled by the opposition and their new found friends. That is the bitter truth and those that do not like it should learn to live with it.”

It is sad and unfortunate that President Olusegun Obasanjo, a father of the nation and a man that we all revere and have immense respect for, could have misread the situation so badly.

It is simply not true that President Goodluck Jonathan wishes to remain in power at all costs and the suggestion that he has a hidden agenda or that he somehow imposed his will on INEC by getting them to postpone the elections is baseless and absurd.

The security chiefs made their recommendations and there were numerous other challenges that INEC had which caused them to postpone the elections for six weeks. This was INEC’s decision and not Jonathan’s.

The reasons for that postponement were profound and legitimate and we have made it clear all along that whether the election was on the 14th February or any other day President Jonathan is more than ready.

President Goodluck Jonathan has also made it clear that no matter what happens, the handover date of 29 May will stand after the elections have been fought and won. What more does President Obasanjo want to hear?

It is most uncharitable and unfair for him to suggest that President Jonathan wishes to remain in power by hook or by crook because that is not the nature of Jonathan. It is even worse for him to compare him to President Laurent Gbagbo.

To Jonathan, politics is not a matter of do or die and President Obasanjo knows this more than anyone else. We will respond to President Obasanjo in full at the appropriate time but the truth is that we will not allow him or anyone else to distract us from the task that lies ahead.

We have an election to fight and to win and that remains our primary focus. We reject President Obasanjo’s very serious and grave allegations and we are not in the least bit disturbed by them because we know that they have no basis in truth, rationality or reason.
