Fashola Encourages Low-Key Handover Ceremonies

Fashola Encourages Low-Key Handover Ceremonies

The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola has urged the incoming government on State and National levels to embrace low-key handover ceremonies saying the focus of the day should be what the incoming government plans to do and not the usual funfair. He also says it’s time for us to emulate how it is been done in other parts of the world. Hear him;

“I think we should do what normal countries do as regards inauguration. There should not be too much fanfare about this. We should understand that the tenure of the current administration will end on the midnight of May 28. Continue...

“A new President and new government are in office subject to the constitutional requirement of Section 140 of the Constitution to declare their assets and take their oath of office. So, essentially, what people see during the day is ceremonial.

“The law has taken its course at midnight. So, that is the most important thing. So, I hope at various state levels and national level, we will hear indicative directions about which way we are going (on inauguration day).
His tenure expires in 3 weeks.

Emmanuel Sithole's murder case postponed

Emmanuel Sithole's murder case postponed

The trial of the four men accused of killing Mozambican man Emmanuel Sithole in a savage attack that was caught on film, was postponed in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday May 4th.

Mthinto Bhengu, Sizwe Mngomezulu, Ayanda Sibiya and Sifundi Mzimela stabbed Sithole to death on a street in northern Johannesburg township, last month. They face charges of murder & robbery.

Bhengu and Sibiya told the court, through their lawyer Vinesh Ramlakan, that they wanted to enter into a plea agreement with the state. Their co-accused, Mngomezulu and Mzimela would plead not guilty.
"My clients will plead not guilty to the charges, and those are the instructions I have,” their lawyer Vhonani Matshidza told the court.
There were no demonstrators outside court compared to their first appearance last month. Sithole’s sister, Thando Sithole told journalists outside court that her brother’s full names were Emmanuel Josias Sithole.

President Jacob Zuma announced during Freedom Day celebrations in Pretoria last month that Sithole’s actual name was Josias, and that he was an illegal immigrant.

The matter was postponed to May 13 for a possible plea agreement and for Bhengu and Sibiya to give further instructions to their legal representative, Ramlakan.

Even with my ill-health, I haven't stopped drinking, womanizing or smoking - actor Olumide Bakare

Actor Olumide Bakare who has been ill since 2013 says even with his ill health, he has not stopped smoking, womanizing and drinking. According to the 63 year old actor, he has lived with these habits since his youthful days and it will be difficult for him to just do away with them
"I have not out-rightly stopped but I have slowed down. I don't know how to tell lies. I still smoke and drink. I still find time to sleep with women. But the truth is that I am not doing all these things as before. And the fact still remains that I am not properly married" he told Encomium magazine
Asked if he was taking any precautions to curtail his habits, the actor said;
"Let me tell you one thing about life. God doesn't care about habit but your heart. How clean is your heart to God and people around you? How do you sail across the ocean of your life and all that? All these are what God cares about. It is not about whether you smoke or drink. Even those who don't smoke and drink, worse things happen to them. I am a very straight forward person I have been in all these habits for about 45 years and I want to tell you, no shaking" he said

Father Of 26-Year-Old Pregnant Woman Blames GEJ For His Daughter’s Murder

Father Of 26-Year-Old Pregnant Woman Blames GEJ For His Daughter’s Murder

The father of a 26-year-old pregnant woman, who was murdered in the Arepo area of Ogun State last week, has blamed President Goodluck Jonathan for the incident. Mr. Babafemi Ojo, whose daughter Damilola Fajana, was killed on April 28, said this in a statement on Monday.

Ojo explained that his daughter was killed by a stray bullet during a gun battle between the members of the Odua Peoples Congress and pipeline vandals.
He said it was unfortunate that Jonathan could hire the services of the OPC and award the group a huge contract just because he wanted to win an election.

The bereaved father wondered why men who were not trained professionals were allowed to secure government facilities in residential areas.
He said, “The unconstitutional empowerment of ethnic militias has resulted in the deaths of many innocent Nigerians, particularly in Arepo area of Ogun State.
“My daughter was killed in a crossfire while driving back home after a hard day’s job. Damilola was a 26 year old pregnant lawyer. She was a graduate of the University of Ado Ekiti.
“President Jonathan is linked to her death by the reason of his patronage of people who have no basic training in arms and weaponry —in the business of pipeline protection, a very dangerous security enterprise which is supposed to fall under the purview of trained Nigerian security agencies.

One killed in police, robbers’ shoot-out

One killed in police, robbers’ shoot-out

Eneni Nwane

Some suspected robbers on Friday engaged the police in a shootout in the Ijora area of Lagos State, during which one of the suspects was killed, while a policeman and a woman were injured.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased suspect, who was identified as Eneni Nwane, was one of three robbery suspects which had their hideout among the plank houses in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that during the crossfire, a policeman, Corporal Mohammed Abubakar, who is attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, which stormed the robbers’ hideout, was shot by the suspected robbers, while a 54-year-old woman, identified simply as Adewumi was also hit.

It was learnt that the suspects belonged to a gang notorious for snatching expensive vehicles, as well as robbing residents of the Seven-Up, Ijora.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the police had earlier arrested four members of the gang, who were helping the operatives to fish out their accomplices.

One of the suspects, Gbolahan Lawal, reportedly led the police to the Ijora Badia area on Friday when the shootout occurred.

A police source said two of the robbery suspects, who exchanged fire with the police, escaped on water after Nwane was shot.

He said, “It was at about 10pm on Friday. We had already arrested some members of the gang. It was one of these suspects who took us to their hideout in the Ijora Badia area so that we could arrest more suspects. Nwane was one of them.

“The robbers stayed in one of the plank houses in the area. When they suspected police presence, they opened fire on us. We replied, and there was a heavy shootout. In the process, they shot a policeman in the leg and also a woman.

“As the gun battle continued, Nwane was hit.

“We actually arrested him with the bullet wound, but he died later. When the two others saw this, they fled.”

Our correspondent gathered that the police recovered four stolen cars, two AK-47 rifle magazines, several live and expended ammunition from the gang.

A locally-made pistol was also recovered.

Lawal, 26, who hails from Ibadan, Oyo State, told our correspondent that he had gone with the gang on five operations before he was arrested.

He said, “One of the cars we snatched was a Toyota Camry, and we snatched it in the Bariga area of Lagos. We had four guns which we normally used for operations.

“We have gone on about five robbery operations. When the police arrested four of us, the others escaped at that time.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said he would get back to our correspondent on the matter.

He, however, had yet to do so as of press time.
