The Christian Association of Nigeria on Wednesday protested what it termed the attempt by the Federal Government to include Nigeria among the Arab nations to fight the Islamic State, popularly known as the ISIS.

Saudi Arabia, according to reports, was building a coalition of 34 Muslim/Arab countries to fight ISIS, with Nigeria named among them.
A statement by CAN on Wednesday night protested the inclusion of Nigeria in the coalition.

The statement, signed by the General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, said: “This singular gesture of the Buhari government betrays so much, and tends to confirm our fears that underneath everything this government is doing, there is an agenda with strong Islamic undertones, aimed at undermining Nigeria’s pluralistic character and neutrality regarding government’s affiliation to any one religion.

“While joining hands with other countries to fight ISIS is something good, our country must not be tagged as a Muslim or Arab nation. Christians must make a public statement showing their discontent on this development which portends great danger to national unity and integration.”

                                       Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital when the management of the Federal University of Petroleum, Effurum, Delta State visited him, reasoned that for a university to be ranked among the best, it should be able to boast of quality staff, robust research, adequate facilities and laboratory equipment as well as adequate funding. “It is only then they (universities) can produce high standard graduates.”

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Akii Ibhadode Fas, said their visit was to appreciate Obasanjo for approving the establishment of the university during his tenure as Nigeria’s president and also present to him a special award.

The institution, which was established in 2007, is the first petroleum university in Africa and sixth in the world. It is meant to produce high level manpower for the petroleum industry.

Obasanjo, who recalled that some years back, the University of Ibadan (UI) was number four among all universities in the commonwealth countries, expressed regret that it lost the position several years ago and is yet to recover. “It is sad that we were blessed with abundant oil which should have served as a blessing, but we have messed it up. But all is not lost, we are not there yet, but we will get there.”

The former president urged those managing the country’s universities to accept that something is terribly wrong, and try to do “something unique” to bring the institutions back to their past glories.
He disclosed that when he established his private university, the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, he challenged its management to “produce a Nobel Laureate within 20 years of its existence.”

                           Mahmoud Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed January 9, 2016 for the supplementary election of the Southern Ijaw Local Council cancelled by the body recently.

Sources within the Commission said yesterday that the tentative date being canvassed by top officials and stakeholders seems to be widely acceptable to all the principal actors in the election saga.
“Apart from the fact that the yuletide period is around the corner, consideration was given to the fact that a lot of people would return home to their villages and they wouldn’t want to be bogged down with the inconveniences of the election.

The commission wants to consult with the various stake holders and needs time to prepare for the make or mar re-run,” one of the sources said.

In order to perform its duty, Yakubu was said to have decided to carry everybody along and involve all concerned in widespread consultations.

The electoral boss, alongside his top lieutenants yesterday, met with security chiefs in the area including the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sanusi Oki, his Army counterpart, Major General Alali Okunola and those of the Naval, Air Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.

The security situation during the recent election was discussed at the meeting, while plans were laid out to prevent a recurrence of the lapses recorded in the last poll.
The INEC boss is set to meet with all the parties that participated in the last election, together with all the candidates on Thursday in Abuja.

“They are expected to come to the meeting with all their grievances and those present are also expected to thrash all the issues exhaustively,” another source revealed.
“The chairman has been consulting widely and he wants to carry along all the stakeholders, regardless of their status or affiliations.”

It shall be the turn of the media and civil societies groups on Friday, during which INEC is expected to announce the date for the bye-election.

“INEC is trying to ensure that it shakes off the under-performance tag that is being attached to it. The boss wants to be seen as being fair and effective.

“After the Kogi near-disaster, he can’t afford to have another misstep in this one. His integrity and that of the commission are at stake here,” a source said.

Read the statement released by British High Commissioner on the violence in Zaria

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright has released a statement on the violent clash between Nigerian Army and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. He called on the Nigerian military to conduct their operations within the rule of law. The statement below:
"Like many across Nigeria, I am following with concern the reports of violence in Zaria over the weekend between the Nigerian security forces and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. I am further concerned at reports that protests in Kaduna have turned violent.
Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity adds a great deal to this country’s rich culture. It is important, therefore, that Nigerians of all faiths are allowed to assemble and worship freely. In addition, I call on the security forces to conduct their operations within the rule of law, and for demonstrators to ensure any protests are peaceful and equally act within the law.
