Zambia's presidential election has been won by Defence Minister Edgar Lungu of the governing Patriotic Front. He won by a 48.3% majority, according to the election commission.
His rival, Hakainde Hichilema of the
United Party for National Development, who earlier denounced Tuesday's election
as a sham, came close with 46.7% of the vote.
The election was called following
the death of President Michael Sata on 28th October, 2014 (aged 77) in London,
United Kingdom, although, Guy Scott, a white Zambian of Scottish descent, ruled
in the interim, having been the Vice president of the country. He was
prohibited from contesting the election because his parents were not born in
Zambia.

Lungu, a lawyer by profession has
held two portfolios in the past government as Justice and Defence Minister, and
after contesting the Presidential election on 20th January, 2015, he
emerged winner.
He becomes the sixth democratically elected
president of Zambia and will serve the remainder of late Sata's term until
elections in 2016.
Will he have the “heart of all” and
embrace friends and foes so as to ensure rapid development in the country? Time will tell.
