Brazil Senate impeach first female President Dilma Rousseff for breaking budget laws

Brazil Senate impeach first female President Dilma Rousseff  for breaking budget laws

Brazil's first female President Dilma Rousseff was impeached today Wednesday August 31 following a 61-20 vote by the senate which went on for hours. Pro-impeachment senators burst into a rendering of the national anthem, some waving Brazilian flags, while allies of Rousseff stood stony face.

68-year-old Rousseff, the country's first female president, will be removed from office and replaced by Vice President Michel Temer, 75. He will be sworn in on Wednesday to serve out her term which extends through 2018.
The impeachment came two days after Rousseff staged a defense before the senate on her actions on Monday and insisted she was innocent of any wrong. Lawmakers had charged that she breached fiscal rules in an attempt to cover up the nation’s budget woes.

"I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime," Rousseff, told senators on Monday. "I can’t help but taste the bitterness of injustice."
Rousseff described the impeachment process, which has been going on for about a year, amounted to an illegal coup.  She said the move was aimed at protecting the interests of the country's economic elite and rolling back social programs that lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during the last decade.
Recalling how she was tortured and imprisoned in the 1970s for belonging to a leftist guerrilla group, Rousseff urged senators to "vote against impeachment, vote for democracy. Do not accept a coup.
Her opponents, however, have hailed the chance to turn the page on a drawn-out political crisis, the country's worst recession and a sweeping corruption scandal at state oil company Petrobras.
About 50 leftist demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace to show their support.
"We are protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy," said 61-year-old farmer Orlando Ribeiro.
In the center of the capital, extra security and the closing of avenues near the Senate caused massive traffic jams. Police said they were preparing for large protests later in the day.

Lawyers presenting closing arguments could not hold back their emotions as the clock wound down on a crisis that has paralyzed Brazilian politics for months. A lead lawyer for the case against Rousseff, Senator Janaina Paschoal, wept as she asked forgiveness for causing the president "suffering," but insisted it was the right thing to do.
"The Brazilian people must be aware that nothing illegal and illegitimate is being done here," she said.
Rousseff's counsel, veteran lawyer Jose Eduardo Cardozo, retorted that the charges were trumped up to punish the president's support for a huge corruption investigation that has snared many of Brazil's elite.
"This is a farce," he said in a speech during which his voice alternated between shouts and near whispers. We should ask her forgiveness if she is convicted," he added. "History will treat her fairly. History will absolve Dilma Rousseff if you convict her."
Cardozo said she would appeal the impeachment through the Supreme Court. Rousseff is the first Brazilian leader to be dismissed from office since 1992, when Fernando Collor de Mello resigned before a final vote in his impeachment trial for corruption.

Chris Brown who was in a brawl with a young woman over jewelry was tested for drugs after being arrested. There are indications that drugs were found at his house before he allegedly pulled a gun on a guest.

Law enforcement sources say Chris gave up a blood sample Monday night after arriving at the jail.
Brown's accuser, Baylee Curran, was on "TMZ Live" Tuesday and when she was asked about drug use she got very nervous and wouldn't answer.

It was reported that during the standoff, Chris threw a duffel bag out of the window and cops found 2 guns and drugs. His arrest was for felony assault with a deadly weapon and not drugs.

Chief strategist and founding member of ISIS, Abu Muhammad is dead

The deadly Islamic terrorist organization, ISIS has announced that it's founding member and chief strategist Abu Muhammad al-Adnani who urged followers to carry out attacks on Western civilians while serving as the terrorist movement’s chief spokesman and propagandist has been killed by airstrikes in Aleppo, Syria.

According to a released statement  Adnani was killed while surveying the operations to repel the military campaigns against Aleppo.
A US defence official said on Tuesday night that a coalition air strike earlier in the day had targeted Adnani in the town of al-Bab.

Adnani was "martyred while surveying the operations to repel the military campaigns against Aleppo", Isis' Amaq news agency said, without giving details about how he died.

Adnani started one of ISIL’s most notorious threats, intended to inspire Muslims living in Europe to turn on their adopted countries, particularly France.
He urged Muslims to “kill a disbelieving American or European – especially the spiteful and filthy French,” adding:
“Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him.”
Aymenn Jawad Tamimi, an expert on jihadist groups, said Adnani's death "is significant symbolically and in pointing to the wider decline of ISIS"
"If a coalition air strike hit him, it shows intelligence penetration by the coalition is very high. Otherwise it would not have been possible to take out so many high-ranking figures," he said.

Nigeria's GDP: NBS hopeful on the nation's economy

Nigeria's GDP: NBS hopeful on the nation's economy

Read the press statement released from the presidency on the economic state of the nation
The just released GDP figures for the 2016 second quarter by the National Bureau of Statistics while confirming a temporary decline, has also indicated an hopeful expectation in the country's economic path.
The following statement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu on the latest NBS report:

"The just recently released data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that Gross Domestic Product declined by -2.06% in the second quarter of 2016 on a year-on-year basis.

A close look at the data shows that this outcome was mostly due to a sharp contraction in the oil sector due to huge losses of crude oil production as a result of vandalisation and sabotage.

However, the rest of the Q2 data is beginning to tell a different story. There was growth in the agricultural and solid minerals sectors which are the areas in which the Federal Government has placed particular priority.

Agriculture grew by 4.53% in the second quarter of 2016 as compared with 3.09% in the first quarter. The metal ores sector showed similar performance with coal mining, quarrying and other minerals also showing positive growth of over 2.5%. Notably also, the share of investments in GDP increased to its highest levels since 2010, growing to about 17% of Gross Domestic Product.

The manufacturing sector though not yet truly out of the woods is beginning to show signs of recovery while the service sector similarly bears watching.

Nevertheless, the data already shows a reduction in imports and an increase in local produced goods and services and this process will be maintained although it will start off slowly in these initial stages before picking up later.

The inflation rate remains high but the good news is that the month-on-month rate of increase has fallen continuously over the past three months.

Unemployment remains stubbornly high which is usually the case during growth slowdowns and for reasons of a structural nature.

The picture that emerges, barring unforeseen shocks, is that the areas given priority by the Federal Government are beginning to respond with understandable time lags to policy initiatives. Indeed, as the emphasis on capital expenditure begins to yield results and the investment/GDP numbers increase, the growth rate of the Nigerian economy is likely to improve further.

As these trends continue, the outlook for the rest of the year is that the Nigerian economy will beat the IMF prediction of -1.8% for the full year 2016.

The IMF had forecasted a growth of -1.8% for 2016, however the economy is performing better than the IMF estimates so far. For the half year it stands at -1.23% compared to an average of -1.80% expected on average by the IMF.

What is more, it is likely the second half will be better than the first half of 2016. This is because many of the challenges faced in the first half either no longer exist or have eased.

A Nigerian doctor was caught with 'extreme' porn videos including a video of a man having sex with a snake, a court heard.

The doctor named Cyprian Okoro, 55, allegedly stored the images on his Samsung mobile phone having received them via mobile messaging app WhatsApp, the Old Bailey heard.

They included three videos of a woman having sex with a dog, one of a man having sex with a snake and one of a woman having sex with a horse, jurors were told.

The defendant is on trial charged with five counts of possessing ****ography of a 'grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise obscene character'.

Okoro is also accused of one charge of possessing indecent images of a child relating to a video of a two-year-old boy.

Opening the trial, prosecutor Nicola Devas told jurors they would be spared from watching the videos as the question of whether they were indecent or extreme was not at issue.

The footage came to light when, on August 28 2013, Okoro's Samsung phone was seized by police and examined by specialist officers from Norfolk Constabulary before being returned.

The forensic examination found three of the videos, including the one of a toddler, had been stored on a password protected specialist App or 'vault', the court heard.

In February 2014, the defendant was arrested and his phone examined by police for a second time.

The indecent video and footage of a woman having sex with a dog were still in the vault while other images had been deleted, the court heard.

In his police interview, Okoro said pictures would be sent to him on WhatsApp and automatically go
into his photos gallery.

As the indecent video had been manually moved to the vault, Mrs Devas told jurors it was clear he had viewed it.

She said: 'What we say is he has received videos on WhatsApp, downloaded on his phone and three specifically moved into a further password protected vault.'
Okoro, of Streatham, south west London, denies the charges against him.

Two young women were stripped and beaten blue-black by an angry mob before they were rescued by the police. The women deceived a man and stole about Sh17,000 (N52,000) in Embu town of Kenya.

According to a report by Nairobi News, Embu Deputy Police boss Ziro Arome said the women, identified as Wincate Mukami and Faith Wangui, had been moving around town under the guise of selling SIM cards while tricking unsuspecting people.

But, their cups got full after they conned a businessman on Monday evening. The man raised alarm which attracted people.

“Had the police not arrived on time, maybe they would have been harmed more. They had visited a businessman’s shop and tricked him to give them the money promising to demonstrate something. They have been conning people under the guise of selling SIM cards,” said Mr Arome.

The police boss said the officers who rescued them salvaged the torn clothes with which they wrapped themselves. Mr Arome urged members of public to stop engaging in mob justice and report the matters to police for prosecution.

A third accomplice escaped during the 5.30pm incident. The suspects are being held at the Embu Police Station.

The groom, Abdulrasheed, aka Skillz is a multi-talented musician, music producer and a leading member of the JJC and 419 Squad based in London.

Niger Delta militant group blow up major oil facility in Delta state

Niger Delta militant group blow up major oil facility in Delta state

A militant group known as the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Movement, NDGJM, has blown up the Ogor-Oteri major delivery line operated by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company and Shorelines Petroleum in the state.

The group in a statement released and signed by its leader, “Gen” Aldo Agbalaja, said they carried out the attack on the oil facility at about 3am.

The group said they will also be launching “Operation Crocodile Tears” since the military had launched “Operation Crocodile Smile” to supposedly worsen the Niger Delta crisis.

Their statement reads below:
“Recent developments around our region, especially as it concerns the issue of justice and our inalienable right to protect our heritage, have proven us right all along. Now it has become clearer who is serious about getting justice for our people and who has been using the name of the region and the destinies of all our peoples to feather their nests, raising dusts merely to harass the Nigerian state and the oil multinationals into parting with money. Although some selfish machinery, merely put together to achieve some pecuniary ends, has been parading in the name of the peoples of the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate will not be derailed on its mission to getting justice for the people. When lines are blurred, justice is most likely to be miscarried. If there shall be a negotiation, it must be seen and indeed, must be in actual sense, be representing all the individual nations of the region equally. The drama that trailed the visit of some Ijaw royal fathers to the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, in Abuja recently is more reason why equity must be a factor in setting up a body that will dialogue on behalf of all the peoples of the Niger Delta.” “If the said leader could not respect the royal fathers of his ethnic nation, if he is lording his will over them, what chance do other nations have, which do not have adequate representation? That said, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate will no longer sit quietly watching the endless harassment of our people in various parts of the region by the Nigerian military. We had once warned against the victimization and harassment of defenseless people of the region, especially in the creeks, but rather than heed, the Nigerian military has increased its presence and made life more difficult for our people. They are now killing our people on the basis of mere suspicion, this cannot continue. With the launch of their ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate is also serving a notice on the commencement of our ‘Operation Crocodile Tears.’ It shall from now on be an eye for an eye; for every military atrocity carried out in the creeks and hinterland of the Niger Delta, the Nigerian armed forces will have the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate to contend with. To this end, we are alerting all those working in the UQCC/UPS Erhomukokwarien in Ughelli, Eriemu Pigging Manifold in Agbarha, Otorogun Gas Plant, Olomoro Flow Station, Warri Refinery, Port Harcourt Refinery, Eleme, OB-OB and Obite gas plants in Omoku to evacuate because what is coming to those facilities are beyond what anybody has seen before. We do not want innocent blood being spilled, therefore, we advise all indigenes living in the vicinities of the facilities to relocate for the time being. The world should, however, note that the bloodbath that is about to commence in our already beaten, battered, squeezed and impoverished homeland, the Niger Delta. It is all the baby of the Nigerian government; they are the people, who are in one breath preaching resolution through dialogue and also breathing bullets and bombs on a troubled, but trusting people. “Hold the Nigerian President responsible for the genocide that his armed forces is about to unleash on our people,”the statement read

Irish Artist Bono Commends President Buhari's social investment programmes

Irish Artist Bono Commends President Buhari's social investment programmes

Earlier today, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, received members of the ONE campaign led by the international Rock Star artist Bono, and Africa's richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, at the Presidential Villa to discuss the possibilities of a global partnership to address the crisis through international advocacy.

Addressing members of the delegation that included former UK Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, VP Osinbajo noted that "it is very important that you chose to come and offer some partnership. This is great and we are pleased…Partnership is certainly the way to go."

He said no matter how prepared a country could be, handling the kind of crisis in the North-East with two million displaced people including children, as a single country "would be irresponsible."

According to him however, a global partnership to address the situation should be coordinated and more focussed on what is required to be done, for instance, in addressing the issue of malnourished children and not attempting to do too much things at once.

Speaking earlier the Irish born artist Bono said he has visited some of the IDPs and said "we want to be useful to you," adding that what he saw in the region was "deeply disturbing."

Bono also commended the social investment programmes of the Buhari administration saying "we have heard of the incredible plans, the social investment funds," adding also that the level of transparency already seen in the administration is both "very exciting and transforming."

The ONE campaign is an advocacy organization with more than seven million people around the world taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases especially in Africa. It has on its board people like Mo Ibrahim, Bill Gates, Micheal Bloomberg among others. It was founded in 2004.
