ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY: Nigeria’s Fallen Heroes
This is a
unique day, not only on the history of Nigeria, but also of other nations of
the world in celebration of heroes who lost their lives defending the
territorial integrity of their fatherland.
It is a day
which is set aside in recognition of the gallant men and women who fought in the Nigerian Civil war that
ended on 15th January, 1970, both the dead and the living.
President Goodluck Jonathan |
This is done
across the federation with several events like release of pigeons to symbolize
peace, placing of wreaths, parade, shooting of guns as well as prayers in
churches and mosques.
On Friday, 9thJanuary,
2015, a special Juma’at prayer was held at the National Mosque, Abuja, where
vice president Namadi Sambo urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the peace,
unity and progress of our country. Similarly, an interdenominational church
service was held in honour of the fallen heroes.
Officers and
men of the Nigerian Armed Forces have fought in various wars and taken part in
many peace keeping operations in Darfur, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, as well as internal
security duties in the Niger Delta crisis, Boko Haram insurgency and many
others.
