A Federal High Court in Lagos has frozen multiple accounts in five Nigerian banks allegedly belonging to former first lady, Patience Jonathan over allegations of money laundering.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun made the order freezing the accounts after listening to an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sometime in November.

The order, according to the Commission, covers Mrs. Jonathan’s accounts in Ecobank Plc, Skye Bank Plc, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Diamond Bank Plc and Fidelity Bank Plc.

The anti-graft agency said that the move to request the freezing of the accounts became necessary after it received intelligence report, which showed that the accounts ought to be investigated.

The ex-parte application to freeze the accounts was supported by an originating summons sworn to by one Abdulahi Tukur, an operative of EFCC, and filed before the court by the EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo.

It requested the court to urgently direct the managers of the bank accounts to, in the interim, forfeit the money in the accounts, to prevent further tampering with same.

After issuing the order, Justice Olatoregun directed the anti-graft agency to enter into an undertaking to pay damages to the former first lady if it turns out that the order should not have been made.

One of the account, domiciled with Skye Bank plc, is said to have a balance of $5,316.66.

Also affected by the order are five companies namely; Finchley Top Homes Limited, Aribawa Aruera, Magel Resort Limited, AM-PM Global Network Limited and Pansy Oil and Gas Limited.

Also affected is one Esther Oba who is said to have a balance of $429,381.87 in her Diamond Bank account while the companies collectively have a balance totaling N7,418,829,290.94 (Seven billion four hundred and eighteen million eight hundred and twenty nine thousand two hundred and ninety naira ninety four kobo).

South African telecom giant, MTN, has fired one of its top and most valuable staffers in order to avoid scrutiny by the United States government over bribes offered to Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Shortly after helping to resolve a hefty fine imposed by the Nigerian government, Amina Oyagbola was so important to MTN that the company gave her two strategic positions. Her corporate elevation saw her combining leadership of the Human Resources department with the post of “Director of Strategic Communications” at MTN.

Ms. Oyagbola and her husband were instrumental in resolving MTN’s serious problem with the Nigerian Presidency culminating in a massive $5.2 billion fine imposed on the company for ignoring the Nigerian government’s directive to ensure that all SIM cards were registered as a strategy to curb Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast.

An insider within the company and other sources in Abuja told our correspondent that, once the fine was imposed, Ms. Oyagbola recruited a close friend, Femi Lijadu, to act as a consultant for “strategic advisory services.” In that capacity, Mr. Lijadu was a member of the team that negotiated with the Federal Government to reduce the fine to $1.7 billion. One of our sources said Ms. Oyagbola and Mr. Lijadu once worked with presidential Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari at the United Bank for Africa.

 

However, another source within the company told Saharareporters that the once powerful corporate player was fired after MTN’s bribe scandal with Mr. Kyari came to the notice of the MTN’s parent company in South Africa.

The source added that the decision to relieve Ms. Oyagbola was taken in order to avoid the consequences of a global disgrace should US authorities ask questions related to the company’s reported offer of an undisclosed sum as bribe to Mr. Kyari before the senior presidential aide helped broker a deal that lowered the fine earlier imposed by the government.

The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a container ladden with two cars loaded with arms and ammunition as well as military equipment imported from United States (U.S.). Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, the Area Comptroller of the command, Yusuf Bashar, said the officers were able to intercept the cars, following a tip-off they got.

“We got a hint that there is a magazine in a used Toyota car 2004 model with Chassis No 2T1BR32E54C309841. Customs officers isolated the vehicle to give it a thorough checking. We discovered 10 pieces of life rounds called Hornady ammunition with the magazine"he said

Bashar added that the command also intercepted another container of used 2007 Nissan Armada car where an Omini American Tactical Rifle No AR48634 and Moasberg American Pump Action with No U648018. were hidden. Also found in the container were two rifles, 3,500 pieces of Premier Hollow point (Air Gun Pellets), and 4,000 pieces of Premier Hollow point (Air gun pellets). We also discovered on examination, in the same container, 3,500 pieces of Premier Hollow point (Air Gun Pellets), and 4,000 pieces of Premier Hollow point (Air gun pellets).

“We also discovered nine pieces of military bullets proof vests; one piece of helmet with rain proof, one pistol Punch, one Riffle Punch, a set of military gas masks, 26 packs of military already made foods and two pairs of military booths.We will hand over the items to the Department of State Security (DSS) for custody of the ammunition because they are too dangerous to be with unauthorised persons,“ he said

Bashar added that one suspect has been arrested while further investigations is ongoing.

Fulani Herdsmen Abduct Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr Jude Onyebadi On His Farm In Delta State, Demand N20M Ransom

The kidnappers of Rev. Jude Onyebadi of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku in Delta State have demanded N20 million ransom for his release.

Onyebadi, who is the Parish Priest of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Issele-Azagba, was kidnapped last Friday at his pineapple farm between Ubulu-Uku and Issele-Uku communities by three gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

A renowned philanthropist, Onyebadi, has one of the biggest commercial pineapple farms in the state.
Sources said the cleric was dragged into the bush by his abductors.

The operation was said to have lasted a few minutes.

The hoodlums reportedly opened negotiations with a bosom friend of the victim and initially demanded for N50 million before reducing it to N20 million, following further negotiations.

But the Director of Communications of the diocese, Rev. Charles Uganwa, said the church would not pay any ransom to the abductors.

Also, the police command assured that the cleric would soon be freed.
It urged the church and all those connected with him to cooperate with security operatives.

Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said his men were closing in on the hoodlums.

He said: “We are combing the bushes and, very soon, he will be freed. I can assure you that we are monitoring the kidnappers who keep shifting from one location to the other. But no matter how they may try to hide, we will get them.

“We are not just going to rescue the victim. We will also ensure that the hoodlums are arrested and brought to justice.”

In this yuletide, an Australian woman narrowly escaped being bitten by a venomous snake at her home in Frankston, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, on Sunday when she suddenly spotted a golden snake wrapped like decoration around her newly setup Christmas tree.

The lucky woman identified as Cheryl immediate called a Snatcher catcher to get rid of the reptile.

According to Barry Goldsmith, Tiger snake is one of the most dangerous snakes in Australia.

• At least 26 Nigerian ladies allegedly used as sex slaves and for prostitution were at the weekend rescued by the South African police, ‘the Hawks’.

• The ladies, according to an online publication, certified. com , aged between 14 and 37 were rescued following a tip-off made to the police that girls were trafficked and lodged for prostitution in the hotel.

The hotel located on Klerksdrop area in South Africa is said to be run by Nigerians based in that country.

Hawks Public Relations Officer, Tlangelani Rikhotso, said the girls were drawn from different parts of South Africa, Northern Cape, KZN, Free State, Johannesburg and Eastern Cape.

He said:

“Those found at the hotel are currently being interrogated on charges of trafficking, while the alleged prostitutes are being investigated separately to reveal how they were picked and how long they have been in the hotel.”

FRSC Bans Petrol Tanker Drivers From Night Journeys

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Sunday reiterated its total ban of petroleum tanker drivers from embarking on night journeys across the country from Monday, December 19.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that efforts had been put in place to impound any truck found contravening the order. Mr Oyeyemi said the ban is meant to promote safe petroleum haulage in the country.

“No tanker should be seen on the road at night, we need to find solutions to incessant crashes of tankers on the road.

“Beneficial as petroleum sector is to the nation, safe haulage remains FRSC concern.
“There is a problem and we have solutions to them, no more night journeys for petroleum products as from Monday, Dec. 19, enough is enough.
“The effects of crashes are quite unquantifiable on human life, the environment and to the economy,” Oyeyemi said.
The FRSC boss also said that a crash involving a tanker laden with petrol would lose about N50million being the cost of its contents and the vehicle.
Oyeyemi said that many crashes that happened at night had also caused severe damage to people and the community.
He said that apart from the lives lost, number of houses, shops, farm and other investment were usually engulfed in flames during a crash involving fuel tankers.

The Corps Marshal added that such incident had portrayed the nation in bad light in the comity of civilised nations.
Oyeyemi said that the dimension and scale of devastation caused by crashes involving petroleum tankers was evident in its multiplier-effects on the society.
According to him, there are existing laws and policies of government that are sufficient in tackling the problem if every stakeholder complies.

He said that the National Road Traffic Regulations 2013, the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme and Safe-to Load- Projects were part of the government efforts to tackle the problem.
Oyeyemi advised tanker drivers to stop deliberate violation, neglect and non-compliance to basic road traffic regulation.

He also appealed to them to stop intimidating other road users,especially, those who drive light weight vehicles by exposing them to unnecessary risk.
The FRSC boss said that the mandatory Speed Limiting Device installation was a good initiative aimed at reducing speed-related crashes.
“It is also essential to install trackers in the vehicles on the fleet to obtain real time information about drivers and driving behaviour which are paramount for successful operations.
“Also drivers involved in delivery and distribution of petroleum products in the country must be properly trained and certified.
“Exposing drivers to new and emerging trends in the transport sector should be considered a priority,” he said.

NAN reports that two weeks to the end of the year, the FRSC had said that about 283 tankers had been involved in road accidents across the country.
Oyeyemi disclosed this statistics in Lagos on Saturday Dec. 17, at the Branch Executive Council Meeting of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTDs).
He said that over N2billion was lost as a result of the accidents during the period.
